What you need to understand is that modern forehand technique has a very small swing, but a lot of wrist action and arm pronation. And the finish is to the side of the body, not to above the shoulder, which is the classic way.
It is not the windshield wiper, just like you say. The racquet face is actually facing down to the ground after the hit, not to the other side of the court. Look at how Federer hits his forehand in slow mo and you'll understand.

Oh and something I forgot to mention. The modern forehand technique works best when hit against a ball on the rise. It doesn't work as well if you like to stay far behind the baseline and hit balls when they're dropping. Try to stay close to the baseline, take balls on the rise with the modern forehand technique. You'll save a lot of energy and control points like crazy.

Djokovic probably doesn't even think he's playing tennis, a game, out there on the court. He's just executing a series of athletic movements that resemble tennis. He doesn't know how to play tennis, he just knows that if he moves his body while holding a stick with a tight net in his hand in a certain way at an incoming ball, the ball will fly to the other side. That's an athletic movement, not tennis. Djokovic doesn't play tennis the right way.
A phenomenal athlete, nonetheless.
