Truth is, super exclusive club members don't really like big tournaments being hosted at their club, anyway. These clubs do not need the money, they're only really hosting for prestige.
After hosting a major the course is pretty torn up from the players and the galleries. It takes a while for it to get back to normal.
So yea, considering members of Muirfield are a bunch of super rich dudes, it was probably very easy for them to stick to their guns and keep their course the way they like it. Losing the Open is an unexpected bonus.
