The american league is up for grabs. Literally any team not from anaheim, minnesota, or new york has a chance (that includes you oakland, tampa bay and houston)
NL is very polarized. If you were going to bet on the season, stay out of the AL and put your money on either the cubs, nationals or mets. The NL west is losing bet.

Yes and yes. You technically have to win your league before you can win the Worlds Eries.
30 teams in the MLB. Two leagues, American and National. 15 teams each. 3 divisions of 5 in each league. The winner of each division gets a playoff spot. The two non-division winning teams with the best record get a Wild Card spot (in each league, four WCs total). The Wild Card game is a one-off. The winner of that game plays the division winner with the best record in a best of 5. The other two teams in the league play a best of five. The winners then face each other in a best of seven. The winner of that has won their league and goes on to the Worlds Eries.
So: Five playoff teams per league. Two one-off Wild Card ganes (one per league). Four best of five division series (two per league). Two best of seven championship series (one per league). One seven game Worlds Eries.
>>67649837
Now would actually be a pretty good time to be a Philly fan. They're rebuilding but have some legit pitching and their games seem to always be decided by 1 run.

>>67649970

>>67649925
Learn to hate umps. They all suck. Everysimgle one. You might be confused when you first start watchimg because you'll see the pitch tracks shows an onvious ball and the catcher even had to leave his crouch to get the thing but the ump will call it a strike. Don't worry its just part of the game.
>>67649949
Why not just have one league of 30 teams and the top 4 or whatever play off for the world series? Would that not be better? Or is there some historic reason behind this convoluted division/league thing?
>>67650021
So the umpires make bad calls all the time and it's just an accepted part of the game, like divegrass here?
>>67649859
Winning the American League or National League used to be a massive deal, because back in the day it worked more the same way that England's soccer league works. The team with the best record in each league won it and automatically went to the World Series. Now, with the playoffs, winning the league feels more like winning a semifinal, although it can still be a big deal if it's a rivalry game.
The Yankees-Red Sox ALCS in 1999 and 2003 are great examples of this.

>>67650024
because you are being a faggot
>>67650024
Originally, there were two separate leagues:
-National League (founded in 1876)
-American League (founded in 1901)
Teams only played within their own league, and at the end of the season the team with the best record was declared league champion and advanced to the World Series to play against the other league champion. This was changed in the 1970s in favor of a bunch of stupid rules like playoffs, divisions, and interleague play, because whoever was running MLB at the time sucked.
>>67649949
Another question: does the team with the best record in their league across all three divisions usually win the league playoffs? Or is it often not them?
>>67650088
It doesn't really matter
>>67650059
>>67650065

>>67650142
It's not completely random, it's just that having the best record doesn't mean much. In general, I think the "best team" makes it to the ALCS/NLCS at least.
>>67650024
Money. More teams competing for more playoff spots (and more primetime playoffs games to be played) down to the last days of the season equals tons more money. That's it.
>>67650208

>>67650229
>>67650088
Without checking the numbers, the best team probably, statistically, has a better shot. But there are very often upsets. Especially in the WC and best-of-five series. A 100 win team could easily lose to a 90 win team they match-up poorly against. Or just one on a hot streak. Like the 2007 Rockies.

Players and coaches figured out Chris Young, who was a questionable choice in the first place. He also may be hurt.
Kris Medlen, god only knows. He's more than capable of being very good, but he's either lost his nerve, or the TJ surgery didn't take (for the second time), or he's gassy, or who knows what.
Hopefully they can turn it around. Dillon Gee looked... okay. Better than having Young or Medlen out there pitching batting practice.
It's not good.
>>67650679
Does KC have any pitchers in the farm who could potentially make starts? Because KC is still a good team but they won't win shit with their starters going 3 innings every night. I'm a little surprised at how much they've struggled thus far.

>>67650833

Another team can only by them at free agency, otherwise they leave as part of a trade. And as for free agency they can shop around to get the best deal.
Baseball is the only sport (of the big 4 in the USA) that doesn't have a salary cap, so there are some contracts that have insane amounts of money

>>67650928
>>67650909

>>67650884
Well, technically they could. If the player doesn't have a no-trade clause (or waives it) a team could trade them for pretty much anything. Say Player A has 100 million on his contract. Team B trades Team A 100 million dollars for Player A. Team B would still have to PAY Player A the 100 million on his contract though.
Normally, only incredibly shitty players get swapped for cash. Nobody trades anyone of value for anything short of draft picks. Hell, often a contract is so onerous that a team will pay another team to take it off their hands. Say a player has 80 million left over 4 years. His team could send him and 20 million to another team (for some dogshit prospect) just so they don't have to pay him to play for them anymore.
But barring felony conviction, whatever team a player is in has to pay their contract. Some do have buyout clauses though.
>>67650109
Ideally, in my opinion, all expansion teams should be dissolved and the two leagues should be made up solely of the original 8 teams in each league. The central division should be eradicated also and have 4 teams in an east and 4 teams in a west division of each league. The regular season schedule would be play the 3 teams in your division 21 times each, the 4 teams in the other division 15 times each and the 8 teams in the opposite leauge 5 times each. This would be much better and we'd get rid of the Blue Jays, Rays, D-Backs, Rockies, Padres, Angels, Asstros, Nationals, Mets, Mariners, Royals, Brewers, Marlels and the Rangers.
>>67650986
Right, so big money transfers don't happen like in european soccer? Is all the excitement around player acquisition based around the draft then?
>>67651032
They do happen, but in free agency.
For example when Max Scherzer's contract was up with the Tigers there was enormous speculation on where he was going to go. The Tigs offered him a ton of money but the Nats offered him more.
The draft in baseball really isn't anywhere near exciting as the draft for NFL, or even the NBA desu
>>67651080
>not inviting your bros and having an mlb draft party
Stay Casual
>>67651026
Jesus are you 75?
>>67651107
Right, for hardcore MLB fans it's still a big deal, but I'm just saying for the average sports fan the NFL draft stands on its own for relevance and importance. And a lot of that comes from the NFL's absurd pageantry in general.
>>67651032
I don't know how they happen in European soccer. But big money deals happen during free agency in the offseason. Teams bid by offering contracts to players not currently under contract. There can also be trades, but like I said only dogshit nobodies get traded for anything less than other players and/or draft picks.
The big money free agents often get no trade clauses. Or limited no trade clauses (with exceptions to teams they'd be willing to play for).
Also, the draft isn't nearly the big deal it is in other sports. There are a LOT more baseball players than hockey, football or basketball. Only the first round really draws attention. Because baseball prospects take years and years and years before they even make it to the majors - let alone before they git gud - they don't draw the same attention as guys in other sports who join the team from the go and can impact that season or the next.
Very rarely do players reach the majors within two years of being drafted, and even then those are top 10 picks, usually with a few years of college ball already. Bryce Harpers and Alex Rodriguezs are once-in-a-decade cases.
>>67651151
Yeah i was totaly fucking around... i watch it in the background until they call a buzz name and i watch said guys highlights untill i passout alone on my couch. Thats how i do mlb draft. But not everyone can be as die hard as me
>>67650796
It means you're misusing the term like a complete spastic.
>>67651154
Ok so do players get drafted when they are younger by the MLB teams and they play for associated farm teams who develop them in the lower leagues until they are ready for their parent team in the MLB? Is that how it works? What sort of age are the usually ready for the MLB?
>>67651154
>I don't know how they happen in European soccer
basically any team can buy any player off any other team, but there are only two transfer 'windows' in a year when they are allowed to do it, in the off season during summer and a 'window aof about a month in winter. Basically they offer money for what they think the player is worth based on his ability, age and current length of his contract to effectively 'buy out' his contract and if the club accepts the player and his agent then negotiate a contract with his new club.
Anyone who thinks Jeff Bannister didnt plan out all of sundays events beforehand is a fucking idiot. He should be suspended, fined and possibly fired. Complete scumbag. Worst manager in the majors.
>>67650790
The NL contender is probably gonna be cubs. The AL has a lot of contenders for the World Series
>>67651326
>>67651263
Yes. All but the prodigies tend to do some college ball (and a lot of the prodigies do too) in order to get better and improve their draft stock.
When a team drafts (and signs) a players, they'll assign them to a certain level depending in their talent. There's the major league club, then AAA, then AA, then High A and Low A (and some other levels below that). The youngest and rawest usually go to the A levels first for development and honing of fundamentals. Top-tier and/or college-tested prospects usually start in AA. AAA is the last test for a prospect. It's where all the top prospects are, the not-good-enough-for-the-majors-but-too-good-for-AAA guys, struggling major leaguers, old veterans looking to prove they still have something in the tank, etc.
>>67651365
>The NL contender is probably gonna be cubs
There's that ottoman humor again
>>67651396
What sort of dosh can they expect to make in those three brackets (A, AA and AAA), I know they make filthy amounts of money in the MLB.
>>67651263
Forgot to add: age depends. Pitcher generally take longer than hitters to develop. Even blue-chip top-10 prospects don't arrive until 21/22/23. Often they're only called up in the last month of the season (in September the roster expands from 25 to 40 for this). Often only called up for a game or a week because of an injury or a scheduling quirk then sent down again.
Most that make it to the majors don't stick in the majors until middle 20s.
>>67651396
Man players get drafted out of highschool all the time just to spend their career in the minors. Defs not just prodegies. Just poor decision makers (unless you are a prdegy then its a fine choice)
>>67651435
This is why players go to college to git gud and improve their draft stock. The position they were drafted at determines the size and length of the contract offer. However, because there are like 30 rounds of draft (for 30 teams), the overwhelming majority of minor leaguers are barely making the equivalent of full-time minimum wage.
>>67651456
>dat ass
so are MLB teams constantly changing, or do they always have a recognisible core of 9-10 good quality players that are there for years and years
>>67651462
I should have been clearer: of the players you will ever hear of, that actually make the majors for once, a lot of them (at least, more than ever before) do college. Of course 80% of ballplayers aren't even good enough to get offered a scholarship to a school with a baseball program worth a damn.
>>67649277
thanks for answering my questions btw lads, I know I have loads so if you get pissed off just stop replying and I'll take the hint kek
>>67651496
Delete that pic right now
I'm warning you
>>67651520
Well there are 25 roster spots on the MLB team. And due to the nature of contracts, and the lack of a salary cap, every team will have at least 10 guys in several consecutive seasons. Good teams with smart management will have a handful of good guys under several years of contract together, but it's not easy.
Because there is no salary cap, the biggest market teams and/or those with the least jewy owners can just outbid small-market teams for their best young players when their contracts are up. And these contracts for All-Star level players are so expensive even the richest teams have trouble keeping more than 3 or 4 together for a couple years.
The best teams have a core of two or three (or possibly more) A+ talents, several B- to A- talents, and the rest niche players, specialists and a couple hot-shot youngin's.

It doesn't start until 3:10 A.M. your time.
Since you said you're looking for a team (perhaps other than the Feelies), here's advice: no West Coast teams. You will miss 90% of their games because of how far behind they are.
The Cubs are actually a really good choice for bongs, besides the fact that they're young and great. Because they play in a residential neighborhood, the super-majority of their home games are in the day. 1:20 local, so about 7 p.m. (for you). They play far more day games than anybody else in the league. Also, their games are broadcast on a national network (WGN), and they're popular all over the country, so you're more likely to find streams of their games. Catch a Cubs home game some time.

Yes. That batter is out, however other runners on base MAY advance (if they tag the base after the ball is being caught and the play is still live).
This brings up what's known as a sacrifice or "sac fly" in which a batter "flies out" (what we call a ball caught in the outfield) but the runner has enough time to tag up and cross home plate.
For the record, fly outs, pop outs and line outs and virtually the same thing, they just describe HOW the ball was batted/caught.

I only know one female Twins fan and she just cries if I mention baseball
>>67650109
Eh, most of the people in this thread weren't even alive before the current playoff system was implemented, I sure wasn't. I have no real basis to compare the two systems. The current playoff system makes the end results a little more unpredictable than just having the two teams with the best records from each league play each other in the World Series which has its pros and cons because "anything can happen in the playoffs". I don't mind the current playoff system really, I feel like the MLB would just make everything worse if they tried to tweak the system to "fix it" (see this year's stupid fucking slide rule).

Yeah, but they're not referring to those as being a dynasty...they're referring to the 3 World Series wins in 5 years...they were just listing all Giants championships at the top
>>67653024
Not sure if serious.
>>67651976
He destroyed the team imo. When Bobby Cox left, he left behind a still decent and playoff team. Freddie did nothing with that team, plus there is Kimbrel and all this other things. I love the Braves and don't care about their record but this move makes me so happy and most Braves fan seem to agree on Facebook at least

I personally don't think he's genuine. There's something off about some of his posts. I mean the dude has been at it for hours, I don't know, it's weird

I has to be. It's only 10 A.M. over there. And the game is scheduled for 7 Pacific time.
>>67653244
I was at work and there was nothing to do so I thought I'd talk to you guys, plus I've been thinking about watching it for a while, when I found out it was on btsports that sealed the deal

wasn't there some type of rule implemented last year that required teams to interview minorities and women for jobs before whites males or some nonsense? Might have been front office and not managerial

what is this /pol/tard babbling about?
is it 4 balls for a walk?

Yes, but if you are hit by a pitch it's an automatic walk

cheers lads first innings over 0-0, from what I've seen so far hitting flyballs looks dangerous unless you are sure you're going to get a home run, they keep getting caught out lel
So /mlb/ how much effort would it take you to throw 46 mph?
webm related.
Also UK guy, do you have any background in cricket?
There are similar concepts that would help.
>>67653711
a little yeah, I've been to old trafford a few times with one of my brothers who is a huge cricket fan
these commentators are like walking baseball encyclopedias holy shit!
>>67653271
Then no, Varitek will not be in the HOF. 0% chance of it happening.
>>67653748
With the exception of very few, once you know the game you'll realize how vapid most commentary is. To be fair, it's mostly from color commentators. Folks calling the game know their shit.
>>67649970
Got some good prospects in the minors right now
>>67653697
I threw 73 the other day at the pitch speed thing they have at the stadium. I reckon with some practice and a few warmups I can hit 100 easy
>>67653748
you're listening to vin scully? old guy who tells a lot of stories?
he's one of a kind, been doing dodgers games for like a century
also
>watching a replay
Will Ortizs retirement help Edgar in the HOF?
Hes only got 3 years
Goddam anon, with the tits.
>>67653987
>watching a replay
dont have much of a choice unfortunately but it's better than not watching at all I guess, I will catch some live ones though because there's afternoon games on bt sports so it will be like 6 here
I have a question, if there's a bloke on first and the hitter on home plate gets a walk does the guy on first get a walk to 2nd as well or does he have to run?
>>67654072
The runner on first gets to go to second after a walk
If you end up enjoying Baseball, MLB.tv would be worth looking into. You would be able to watch live games that way.
>>67653748
Baseball truly has the most autistic fanbase
this maeda lad's decent, striking everyone out and got a hit when he was batting that lead to a point
>>67653845
FP is a complete dumbass but I can't help but love his childlike adoration for the game
also god damn that pic
>>67654106
I am very much enjoying it at the moment dodgers 2-0 up top of the 3rd

>>67654160
it's all gone tits up for Maeda now kek, he just gave up three runs in the third and only one out
he's actually a pretty big lad for a nip isnt he?
sorry for long post gaps getting in posts on the ad breaks
>>67654461
It's okay, the whos are free wins now that they're in freefall.
>>67654463
kek now 4 runs he's give up, he's getting mullered, can't the coach sub him?
>>67654492
Yeah usually they'll let you know if and when relievers are warming up in the bullpen
>>67654492
Spoilers they lose
>>67654490
Not when you have to score 15 runs to win an Anderson start. He even used the "best shape of my life" meme this offseason.
>>67654492
4 runs isn't terrible but it isn't good. You don't want to burn through the bullpen early like that
>>67654463
pretty small for a pitcher, even for an eleven
also does this replay still have ads between every half inning, because live it does, like 2 minutes every time.
