The reason Mercedes aren't bringing the hammer down on Hammertime is if they blamed him for the crash then so would the stewards - and that would mean a 10-place grid penalty for HAM at Monaco. A 10-place grid penalty would mean he'd have no chance to win. Thus the team got its story together and everyone agreed to pretend "we're both at fault" so as to protect the team from losing even more points at the next race.

Note the crucial phrase "Having heard extensively from both drivers and from the team" in the FIA's decision not to penalize:

> FIA statement

> The incident concerned started when Car 6 dropped into an incorrect power mode, as set by the driver prior to the start.

> This created a significant power differential between Car 6 and Car 44 at the exit of Turn 3 coming onto the straight, resulting in as much as a 17kph speed difference between the two cars on the straight.

> Car 6 moved to the right to defend his position, as is his right under Art 27.7 of the Sporting regulations. Simultaneously Car 44 as the significantly faster car with, at that time, apparent space on the inside, moved to make the pass. Art 27.7 requires the leading driver to leave room, if there is a "significant portion" of the car attempting to pass alongside.

> Car 44 had a portion of his front wing inside Car 6 small fractions of a second prior to Car 44 having to leave the right side of the track to avoid an initial collision, which may have led him to believe he had the right to space on the right. Once on the grass on the side of the track Car 44 was no longer in control of the situation.

> Having heard extensively from both drivers and from the team, the Stewards determined that Car 6 had the right to make the manoeuvre that he did and that Car 44's attempt to overtake was reasonable, and that the convergence of events led neither driver to be wholly or predominantly at fault, and therefore take no further action.

I dunno, to me I feel like they both just made a bad judgement call.

Hamilton tried to dive down the inside, knowing that Rosberg was most likely going to take the racing line. Which he did.
Rosberg was too busy looking at his wheel to change the settings, whilst also trying to race, so he didn't notice Hamilol coming down his side until it was too late.

While ROS might have left a little more room, he was also under no obligation to do so. And only HAM had any idea of his closing speed, so only he could judge whether this was a serious chance at overtaking or just a hopeless dive bomb that would crash them both. Lauda summed it up pretty well.

If the driver in Hamilton's position had been from another team - either a competitive one like Ferrari, or a backmarker whipping boy - Mercedes' description of the event would have been very different.

Think of it this way: how would Sky and its phalanx of F1 fellators (legion of Lewis lickers?) describe the crash if it had Hamilton leading, and Maldonado behind? Think they'd be going on and on about how Hamilton was at fault?

Cool that a cow can have its own flag.

This incident was basically hamilton racing 101. From his very initial days he as done this to everyone on track excusing himself as racing incident but when others do same thing its end of world.

His driving is like let me create this position where if other guy doesnt move/leave space both cars are out. In most cases someone is sensible enough to avoid crash and ends up giving position to hamlets.

My question is if you want other driver to move to avoid crashing then where is this magical space you speak of to begin with.

Pretty much. I can't imagine what is must be like for a 18 year old to live in a world where everyone is paying attention to every single thing you say and do. And with such crazy circus around him he is managing himself fine. Usually in Dutch interviews he's quite relaxed, somewhat humble and has some pretty funny bants now and than
>>
>>67611988
Now that you mention it. In Dutch interviews he sounds much more casual saying whatever is on his mind, where in English interviews it appears he just says some bullshit prescribed by the team.
>>
>>67612319

Most of the time he's fine. He is also really good at giving short answers that barely answer the question. I can imagine it is annoying as fuck to have to answer the same quesitons like "how do you feel" etc over and over. Today was a special day for him but he got asked more or less the same questions

>podium
>post-race conference
>journalists for like 10 different stations in the normal post-race pen thing
>exclusive interview with Sky sports
>Probably some shit for Dutch TV afterwards

And all the questions are the same "how do you feel?" "how was the race" "what is it like" like everyone basically knows what the answer is going to be anyway. But yea must get frustrating to answer the same thing 10 times

It's pretty clear that Merc are indeed being ginger about that Ham 10 place grid penalty potential. If there is no immediate penalty then he obviously should have gotten some points taken off or whatever the system is. Didn't Max get something like that for Monaco 2015? Button definitely did for his contact with Maldonado in China but that was a bit more clear cut.

Hamilton is fucked for this season though. He is going to have at least one, probably two grid penalties for extra PU components as he's already on the 4th one on many of them. Maybe even some got damaged in the crash today? And the Merc engine isn't as bulletproof as before, as evidenced by eg Force India. And if he gets one more point then he gets another grid penalty. And even then he NEEDS to finish first and Rosberg can finish 2nd like a million times behind him without actually losing the lead.

It's one more reprimand.
He is fine on penalty points.
Max is the highest on penalty points but will drop the ones he got for his stupid crash in Monaco last year.

Although that does make an interesting idea that when you get 5 or 10 penalty points you get a 5 or 10 place grid penalty respectively and when you get the full 12 points you get the full race ban.

Also having just watched Hamilton's POV of the accident, I think he thought he would be able to overtake on the grass or something, or 2 wheels on grass.

He doesn't actually come off the throttle until he is already on the grass for some time and then starts breaking, at which points he loses it pretty much. It reminds me of that incident between Ros Ham at Bahrain in 2012 where he overtook Rosberg basically off track and didn't lift at all, except this time there was grass there.

The accident was partially caused by Rosberg going slow but the car behind has to react to shit like that. And Hamilton was aware of it and his reaction to the whole thing was to not lift AT ALL and try to carry crazy momentum into an overtake on the inside. Had he breaked or eased off then he could have handled the situation better. Really not that smart driving and I think he basically spilled his spaghetti because he knows he hasn't won and was frustrated etc etc. Just listening to his engine and how he didn't lift until going onto the grass does demonstrate a sense of recklessness that definitely should be punished by at least a warning of some sort but I guess not because muh Merc tactics

Yeah I actually thought both Kimi and Max were going to have to pit one more time for softs at the end. I thought that was the strategy as they were the non-leading drivers, so they would pit earlier and then get fresh tires for the end and go flat out and see what happens. With all due respect Sebby, loved you to bits, loved you to bits, but I tell you something: Amx, Helmut, and all the boys, are putting it on the next level, and it shows in the drivers standings. We're now .. hang on a minute.. we're now sixty-one points behind, sixty-two points behind. I went to F3000, I went to GP2. I have brung my daughter up, when she was in school, "oh Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, Williams, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes" and I.. I stuck by my guns, I said "listen sunshine, drink the red, drink the bull.. drink the red, drink the bull, we will come through." And all of a sudden my daughters's turned round and said to me and looked me in the eye today - looked me in the eye - and turned round and said to me "Dad, Dad.." Amazing. Absolutely amazing. She's seen drivers, she's seen class drivers, like Sebby, l-like.. oh, honest to God..Now, tell me.. you cannot, you cannot, you cannot tell me we have not got a chance of winning the drivers championship. And listen, th-this is.. I gave you preferential treatment Sebby. You cannot tell me, you cannot believe we cannot win the drivers championship, please.

He just drove. Kimi never looked like he was going to make a move.
And he didn't luck out of it. Red bull knew it was likely to be faster and so switched Ricciardo which Ferrari reacted to with Vettel.

things are defo falling his way atm and one of the things you have to do is capitalize on that. he won the race vs 3 cars potentially faster then him.
if you take away from that, you don't understand much about racing.

Again it is his good right to defend his line because he was a whole care lengh ahead when he started to turn to the right and it was stupid from Ham to try it with full force instead of doing at the next corner. >tfw McLaren will keep Alonso and Button for 2017
>>
>>67616769

wut

he could take that line every lap if he was so inclined

rosberg basically closed the door by moving right and hamilton thought he was going to be clever and cuck rosbergs strategy (e.g barrichello on schumi at hungary) by going past him on the inside because he read Nicos move as him trying to force Hamilton onto the outside. He probably assumed in his rage and based on Nicos beta driving that he would yield and leave a space there for him, which he didn't.

This situation is a bit like (using the rubens schumi incident as an example) if Schumi started the straight and moved right to the barrier on the right hand side before Barrichello was alongside him (and then Rubens crashing into the wall and complaining that Schumi didn't leave him space).

Alonso's "leave da space" rant is actually not valid in the situation where he said it because Rosberg just drives all the way to the edge of the track before Alonso is alongside him. He knows Alonso wants the inside line and blocks it, but if he blocks it before Alonso is on his side, he can do that as you can select whatever line you want.

So its basically Hamilton's fault for reacting so shittily to the situation. If someone takes the maximum inside line to a corner or straight then you cant complain that theres no space on the inside because you're not entitled to it, being behind the car
>>

Button is looking more and more destroyed and uninterested recently despite the "upward trend" of McLaren. They cant keep Vandoorne waiting forever. I guess Button is cool and sells a bunch of shit for sponsors but other that his career is looking to be close to over

Whats surprising is that Vettel or Ricciardo (pre-puncture) didn't even catch the 2 in front that easily depsite having tires that were like 10 laps fresher. I was so sure Kimi was gonna hit a cliff after following Max for so long yet nothing happened and the tires were fine and apparently the tires of Vettel driving in clean air performed no better lap times than Kimi destroying his tires with Max

Yeah Vettel confirmed this after the race. His softs were perfectly fine when he went in for the mediums and they just didn't degrade at all. The teams seem to have underrated the tires and the Ferrari accentuates this even more by being light on the tires.
>>
>>67615987
Vettel drove better than Ricciardo this race, that's why he finished in front.

Ricciardo left the track on his 'overtaking attempt', I didn't get why the Sky commentators were praising him. It was just a stupid move from Tricky Ricky.
