I was told by a Slovak, how almost all of the good Slovakian players are from Bratislava. So that it isn't even as much a national team, as it is a city team.
Are they any school/hockey programs? Here a lot of schools let kids take a hockey class instead of a gym class. So they get lots of ice time. The best players end up being 'home schooled' and just play hockey every day.
I see your point about relegation not being the end of the world. Other than Chara, Gabork, Demitra (RIP) and Halak there isn't much top Slovakian talent.
