Soccer players always peak early because they play so much from a super young age so their joints and bones are getting stressed out when they're still developing.

The exception is guys like Vardy who go pro later in life

Outfield players usually peak between 26 and 28. At that age they have collected a lot of experience, while also having a relatively athletic body. That does not mean that older players are complete shit. Players that offer something different from pace (or never had it in the first place) can often adjust to accommodate their ageing bodies.

Rooney simply is a far worse player without his speed. But from what I've seen, he's transitioning into a deeper role anyway, so he might even bounce back from his recent slump of form.
