I think basketball should be and will be sport #1 in America. It was invented there, it can drag entire sports section and nation's sports and raise interest for soccer and hockey eventually. US should drop baseball and NFL as clearly no one is adopting them and focus on doing well in basketball first.

NHL fanbase is pretty entrenched though.
It has the feel of a niche sport, with the accessibility and numbers of a major sport. The NHL won't grow very much, but I doubt it declines any. The only thing that would be a danger would be the continued failure of Canadian franchises, converting Canada to NBA. But with the Laffs on track, and Quebec City ready to expand I doubt that.

Americans won't support promotion and relegation. With the corporate structure of our leagues, most fans won't waste their time supporting a team that isnt competing in a top league. It only works in Europe where your team represents your neighborhood, unlike in the US where teams have vast geographical territory.
