In 2009 it was a competition between Adler and Enke who would be the national keeper at the World Cup 2010. But then Enke got depressed and killed himself in November 2009 and Adler got a fractured rip in April 2010. Neuer was great at the World Cup 2010 and nobody ever questioned him again. Adler almost missed a whole year in 2011/12 after which Bayer Leverkusen switched to Leno and shipped Adler off to Hamburg.
