Pretty much this. If you don't have any interest in the sport in the first place then having good youth coaches and all that is pointless as very few will join the academies.

Over here in the UK there are small non league/Sunday league clubs absolutely everywhere that are full with youngsters and more who join every week just out of love and enjoyment of the sport.

The physical and athletical requirements needed for soccer are very different from the ones required for those other sports. A very tall guy or a fat black guy would struggle to play at pro level.
