I have a friend that was drafted into the NFL. He went to a rural high school which is not known for anything and went to good college but was not a standout. He got drafted late in the 6-7th round had a $300,000 salary and a $100,000 signing bonus. Contract for I believe at least 3 years? Each year he got a $100,000 bonus.
He didn't do much 1st year, didn't do much 2nd year but making something like $500,000/yr. He ended up getting cut picked up by a team, they cut him middle of the season another picked him up, they cut him a few weeks later and then went back to his original team that ended up doing very well that year. He later got cut again and is now a free agent.
He married his college sweet heart and they bought a house. I haven't seen him get picked up by any teams. When is the deadline for that?

Baseball has minor leagues (MiLB) at the single A,AA and AAA with clubs often affiliated to an MLB team. Just domestically, it's the one with the most options, because I get the impression NBA D-League isn't nearly as big. Europe/China basketball must dwarf Japanese baseball.
The thing about the CFL though is that there's a quota on foreign players, it has only 9 teams, and it's still a different sport that someone who plays American football all their life will have to have time to adapt to. Arena football doesn't have as big a change (I think, I'm talking out my ass here), but it only has 8 teams. The AFL couldn't even sustain a development league. It's NFL or bust for most pro football players.

There's a shit ton of minor league leagues, but unless you're on the 40 man roster of the big club you won't be making much at all, 1-3k per month for a few months a year. Signing bonuses can be pretty huge though. There are also other independent leagues where you can make some chump change after your day job.
