The best team is the team that is the most consistent throughout the year. The league system allows you to see which team is the most consistent, as every team plays against each other twice (once at home, once away). The only reason you would use a knock-out tournament to determine the best team is if the tournament only takes place over a few weeks (like the World Cup). And even knock out tournaments like that have a group stage (league) at the beginning to eliminate any shit teams that may get a lucky first game.
