I was a centre half myself in lower league but competitive football, and yes, if there was an opportunity for an intervention in the first 5 minutes with the striker I would always go in hard, let him know I was there.
But Pepe and Ramos are known hard cunts. I had to announce myself to the striker I wasn't going to let him have an easy time, Pepe and Ramos their reputation precedes them. If you do "let them know" you do it in the first minutes when you can commit a bookable offense but likely get away with it
