She saw the only way to save the country from utter irrelevance was to turn London, which had been the financial capital of the world for hundreds of years, into the main power house. So she did that. This encouraged people to come to UK. In turn, UK stopped being an industrial economy and became a Banking economy.
She also had the luck of North Sea having more oil and, with the power of hindsight, the Falklands having vast reserves.
Nearly every single industry, coal mining, iron works, you name it, was losing money hand over fist. The north demanded that the country bailed them out. This was suicide. So she cut off the leg to save the body. This made lots of resentment and people from low income, low social class backgrounds, are taught she was the devil incarnate and ruined the UK, when she actually saved it.
The UK is the 5th largest economy in the world. A population of 65m is the 5th biggest economy. For fun information.
