How did football overtake baseball as the most popular American sport in the 60s? And why exactly in that decade?
>>
because baseball is boring as shit
>>
>>67008124
In the 60s? That's news to me. I always thought it was in the 80s where football started to take the number one spot, followed by the baseball strike in the early 90s, which made many fans mad & cynical towards the game and it's players and turned them off from the sport.
>>
>>67008137
I think this dude speaks for everyone here. Boring to play, even worse to watch.

/thread
>>
>>67008124
Because the average person doesn't have an appreciation for the intricacies of baseball and would rather watch monkeys smash their heads against each other's
>>
>>67008168
>>67008137
That doesn't really answer the question though.
>>
>>67008174
>why did it overtake
Bc baseball is boring
>why in that decade
Bc people finally figured out how boring it was.
>>
>>67008164
It was in the 60s, my guess it's because of NFL films and massive media popularization of the Superbowl. That's exactly why most fans today count only the Superbowl era as legitimate and why Vince Lombardi has a bigger cult around him than say, Paul Brown or George Halas.
>>
>>67008188
Why is baseball boring? Do you even understand how it's played you limey cunt?
>>
>Why did a fast-paced game that relies heavily on visual spectacle supplant a slow-paced game that relies heavily on analyzing each move right around the time that television replaced radio as the primary form of media through which Americans consumed sports?

Couldn't tell ya
>>
>>67008124
I'm going to guess tv made all the difference with football being more of a spectacle and baseball being more of a pleasant way to spend a day.
>>
>>67008207
>hurr lets sperg over flags!!1

It's slow, has no flow or rhythm by its nature. So it's not interesting to watch.
Also there's no momentum, no big plays to change the game or changing tactics to outwit the opposition.

It's a dude hitting a ball thrown at him.

It's a bit more complicated version of rounders right? With a bigger bat? You hit the ball then run? Think I got it down.

Least American football you get to see black dudes run into each other and shit.
>>
>>67008199
Also, before the Superbowl era, college football was the most popular form of football. I think it wasn't until east coast media started milking Broadway Joe when the pros became more popular.
>>
>>67008268
>no big plays to change the game

I think hitting a grand slam in the bottom 9th inning to win the game by 1 run is the definition of a big play.
>>
>>67008290
So a dude hitting a ball, at a certain time of the game?

What an Astounding tactical accomplishment
>>
>>67008268
Lol, holy shit. Just like I figured, no understanding of the game

>hurr let's sperg out and pretend that baseball isn't less popular in Britian and that everyone there has a great understanding of it!!

Can you tell me one term from baseball that isn't 'home run'?

>lol throw ball hit ball so dumb XD
>>
>>67008306
So a dude kicking a ball at a certain time of the game?

What an astounding tactical accomplishment
>>
>>67008306
>so a dude hitting a ball at some point?
>so a dude kicking a ball into the net?
>so a dude landing a punch to the head?

You can reduce every sport to meme shit like that
>>
>>67008312
Was anything I said wrong? And why?

>"omg I'm so enlightened, I know a game really well that literally no other country on earth gives a shit about!!"

>>67008324
>>67008324
Typical American poster

Just attack other sports out of insecurity. It's just a sport I'm not trying to kick your dog mate.

Football is great, you should try it. Everyone else is/has.
>>
>>67008327
he is right though, the only thing tactical in baseball is baserunning.
>>
>>67008327
But what I mean is, that's all baseball is.

Okay I'll grant you catching and running.

Even then it's hardly riveting entertainment. Know what I mean?

Its why less and less people watch the games year on year if I heard corrextky
>>
>>67008312
The Brit is taking the piss out of you. Stop responding for God's sake.

And Baseball obviously got overthrown because American Football is a sport to watch and tv's got popular around the 60's
>>
>>67008346
>there's no tactics in pitching
>>
>>67008363
Not even man.
Just saying it's boring. Then explaining why. No piss taken here.
>>
>>67008357

How about pitching? There's more than one way to pitch a ball at someone, and every batter reacts differently to the pitch.

There's also base stealing. When you're going to pitch you have to be aware of the dudes behind you trying to get ahead to the next base.

And batting. it's more than just swinging a stick, m8. Your position has to change and be just right for the over 80mph ball coming at you, and you have to get a feel for what that is in the arguably one second it comes toward you.
>>
>>67008342
Yeah, everything you said about it was wrong if that's the extent of baseball strategy (which it is, you basically admitted you know nothing because you don't give a shit, because we're the only country that gives a shit,[which is also wrong, Japan, the Caribbean, and the rest of Central America more or less, love it])

Soccer is okay. Boring as shit compared to baseball though. >Let's kick a ball up and down the field never scoring and flopping onto the ground like a faggot. Super exciting stuff there m8
>>
>>67008364
pitching and hitting are about as tactical as rock paper scissors.
>>
>>67008400
*if you think that's the extent of baseball strategy
>>
>>67008137
And handegg isn't?

9/10 of a several hours long game is standing around doing nothing.
>>
>>67008404
Location, speed, movement, varyiation of pitches, all factor into pitching. Hitting is demanding physically and mentally trying to narrow down what the next pitch will be and adjusting to what he throws in a split second
>>
>>67008426
but at the end of the day, in the major leagues, velocity is the most important thing. a good hitter will be able to homer pretty much anything if he has time to adjust to it.
>>
Because football more overtly displayed talents like physicality, accuracy, strength and quickness

Also they marketed the shit out of it and pretty much made it a holiday to watch football on sunday. Baseball didnt do that
>>
>>67008379
You sure? Because reducing the game to "a dude hitting a ball thrown at him" seems like taking the piss. There are tactical aspects to baseball, and it definitely didn't die out just because it's boring.

I mean, there is truth to your words, but you were being a bit polarizing.
>>
File: image.jpg (54 KB, 500x359) Image search: [Google]
image.jpg
54 KB, 500x359
>>67008441
Wrong again

A pitch sinking down and in at the bottom of your knees will be hit on the ground almost every time, even if it's 85 mph instead of 95. You still only have a split second to adjust. Just look at based Greg Maddux. Movement and location are way more important than velocity
>>
>>67008389
So knowing how to play the game counts as strategy? Wut?

Like I see your point as there's the pitching aspect in cricket (much more complex though btw) so I'll give you that.

But bases and swinging the bat are literally what you need to play and win. It's like catching the ball and kicking it in American football lmao

>>67008400
Japan only bc it has a hard on for cliche American culture like that.
Pretty sure the Caribbean play cricket though mate. And central Americas are some of the most football(soccer) crazy places on the planet.

Look like, you can be prejudiced and stuff that's cool. But just as you've thrown a sperg defending baseball (which only the usa cares about), surely you can see why it's mad you guys don't like football? All the rest of us play it. Gotta be a good reason right?

Find some classic games on YT, or try go to a game somehow. You never know. It's gonna be a lot bigger over the pond in the next 10 years
>>
>baseball is dying meme
Why is this popular? The sport is on a resurgence again and will pretty much stay the #2 sport in the US for a long, long, long time unless the NFL somehow takes a dive due to concussions but that's unlikely.
>>
>>67008474
I've been to soccer games. I watch the World Cup. It's alright but baseball is better

>it's good because it's popular

Worst argument of all time?
>>
>>67008465
But that's all that happens.
Every game.

There's no free kick curled over the wall from 30yrds
There's no save off the line by the keepers fingertips.
There's no crunching tackle from behind that gets a player sent off and changes the game
There's no single insane player on the team that drifts past two guys and bangs it top corner.
There's no highlight events I guess I'm trying to say. Little variation in how the game can be set up and played.
>>
>>67008496
So what you are saying is that it's boring?
Definitely. But it's more than hitting a ball thrown at you. That's like saying that football is only kicking a ball, when it is so much more.
>>
>>67008496
Everything you just listed is boring as shit and still rarely happens
>>
>>67008494
Like, a real one?
Meh, no accounting for taste I spose.

its popular because it's good mate.

The play that happens in football is unlike any other sport, when it all clicks into place it really is amazing to witness.

Called the beautiful game for a reason.

>>67008508
Yes

And yes, obviously.
But even if we are being more accepting here. There are way less dynamics in baseball than football or American football or even basketball.
>>
>>67008467
pitching revolves around the fastball, and if for example it were illegal, batters would be better off not swinging at anything and waiting for the pitcher to rack up 4 balls.
>>
>>67008521
This stuff (maybe except off the line saves) happens every week in the bpl.

Plus way more. How is it boring?

Or you just trolling bc it's easier than discussion?
>>
>>67008529
Stop bullying the Americans. They're happy with their sports and have a hateboner for football, let them hate it.

>>67008521
>boring as shit
Fuck off Americant. If you want to talk shit, talk shit about something you actually know anything about.
>>
>>67008552
I always try to understand or level with American anti-football posters. Never works. Just get hate sadly.
>>
>>67008529
It's more beautiful in baseball when everything clicks. One swing can change the game and put four runs on the scoreboard. Hit and runs. Baseball is a chess game where you anticipate and plan ahead for what your opponent will do. I haven't bothered to explain other aspects of the game because you're just shitposting and wouldn't even understand it anyway because you don't understand the game
>>
>>67008573
>brit claims football is beautiful
>"nuh uh, baseball is more beautiful!"

Lad, why do you do this to yourself? Most people like football more. I'm sure that baseball has big tactical aspects, but it really doesn't make the game any more interesting. To me, it lacks passion. But I'm just a pleb, so what do I know?

>>67008572
Well, you were a bit hostile about the baseball thing, so no wonder they are hostile towards football. How do you rate >your chances in the EC?
>>
>>67008552
>Fuck off Americant. If you want to talk shit, talk shit about something you actually know anything about

Says the retard who has no understanding of baseball and tries to defend it like the cuck Scandanavia and the rest of Europe are

I've watched plenty of soccer and understand it just fine. There honestly isn't much to it. It just isn't my thing
>>
>>67008573
>starts point
>abandons point
>and he's the one who accuses me of shitposting

I understand that comparing football and baseball in terms of beautiful play is just straight up retarded.

Like, I've been civil about it but that's just dumb man. Seeing a dude hit a ball really far and hard isn't beautiful play. It's just doing a good job.

Now look at this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wz-EaTwqNII

Cmon man

>>67008601
Because the thread was about baseball.

But obviously football is brought up any time you criticise American sports

We'll do well, everyone will overhype the team. Then we'll go out in the quarters or semi's to penalties.
>>
>>67008124
the television deals boosted the popularity for football so highly

up until the 80s both sports were tied in popularity

it wasn't until the small accusations of juicing did baseball start to tumble

football continued to rise especially when the contracts got bigger as the years went on which lead to more sports programs in the country

then the serious steroid scandal hit baseball hard which crushed the hopes and ideas of many young and old baseball fans

didn't help that some players out right lied(and continue to lie barry) about using steriods but some later admit it

then you got the television deals for the superbowl literally becoming a money making juggernaut that no sport in the US could handle .

Now with the concussions(CTE) scandals and more former players donating their brains , a majority coming up positive for CTE, this has led a shift in growing sports here. Doesn't help neither knowing that baseball despite being number 2 here is starting to grow also because of the contract deals players have been getting for the past 10 years is just blowing people's minds away.

Miguel Carberra's deal now looks like nickels and dime compared to Stanton's deal of the marlins.

tldr; Television killed the radio star but the radio star is coming back maybe in 10 or so years
>>
>>67008601
>being popular makes something good
>being more complex doesn't make something more interesting

Oh no, gosh darnit. Quit picking on me, the dumb American superior Brit n Finn!! I don't think I can handle it!!
>>
>>67008613
>finland
>scandinavia
>calling it scandanavia
Nice one lad.

If you say that half the shit the brit mentioned doesn't happen on a regular basis, I have a really hard time believing that you have watched a lot of football.
If it isn't your thing, that's cool, I'm okay with it, you shouldn't force yourself to watch something you don't like.
And everything he listed isn't boring as shit. You don't like it. I don't go around saying that coca cola tastes like shit because I don't like it.

>>67008652
Well, if baseball is more interesting, why is it so much less popular than other sports? I'm not saying that football is good because it's popular. All I'm saying is that most people seem to consider football more entertaining than baseball.

Why are you so fucking shook?
>>
because television replaced radio desu
>>
>>67008613
>cuck

Game over
Credibility lost
>>
>>67008671
>so fucking shook
Omg based Finland when did this jump into your vocabulary I love it
>>
>>67008626
You're still talking about baseball with a severely limited perspective of the game and strategy involved. Why are you showing me goals? Do you think I haven't seen a goal in soccer before? Okay now I'm going to ask a question not relating to baseball, I hope you can handle that and not get angry. How is soccer superior to ice hockey? A game with the same goal that takes at least as much skill to play well. Almost every sport has the "put object in recepetacle" objective. What makes soccer so great and special?
>>
>>67008474

Anyone can run from point A to point B, but knowing when its appropriate to do so has a lot of strategy to it. If you decided to just run to the next base because "you literally need to" you're probably gonna get tagged out.

>But bases and swinging the bat are literally what you need to play and win. It's like catching the ball and kicking it in American football lmao

oh Nigel. Keep kicking around that big weightless ball that goes like 38 Kilometers per hour.
>>
>>67008680
Lol, okay faggot
>>
>>67008671
Why so salty Finn? Does getting passed around between Sweeden and Russia get you angry? Soccer is more popular because it's old as fuck and takes no type of special equipment besides a ball and a field to play. Anybody in the world need only find a ball and you're set. It's a decent game and is already engrained in the culture. That's why it's so popular
>>
>>67008695
You don't need ice, skates or a big stick and loads of padding to play it.

You don't need a specialised arena to play it in. You can play football pretty much anywhere.

I showed you that goal as its an example of brilliant team play. Shit that doesn't happen in other team-ball based sports. Something pretty to watch happen over and over.

>>67008698
Are you really counting "oh man do I run to base 1, or two?" As in depth tactical plays that are so massive to think about?

Like sure in the context of a match yeah, you gotta get it right. But it's hardly hard to comprehend is it?

It's not two teams of 11 plays each, in different formations, different tactics for each play and plays set out depending on the area of the pitch the ball is in, or what the score or time is?

Lmao this is getting silly now. You could've stopped this.

>>67008699
Revelling in your idiocy i love it
>>
>>67008170
I'd say it's because football season is shorter, so each game is inherently way more important.

In baseball, losing 4-5 games in a row doesn't necessarily mean jack shit, but in football your season is damn near dead right then and there.
>>
>>67008775
The autocorrect of players. Holy fuck
>>
>>67008753
I'm not sure what part of my post you considered to be salty, the one where I corrected your geographical understanding or the one where I corrected your typo.

If soccer is popular because it's traditional, why is traditional baseball losing to american football and basketball, two sports that have a shorter history as pro sports?

Also why is football still expanding if it's just tradition, while baseball is not expanding at all?
>>
>>67008420
No. It's not.
>>
>>67008775
yeah, I've already said that about equipment here>>67008753

>a sport is good because you be a poor piece of shit and play it

Wow...that's...that's something alright
>>
>>67008800
Okay, why is baseball interesting and good? I really want to know? Is it the clever tactics and incredible outplaying that's done on a tactical level?
>>
>>67008476
The number 2 sport isn't NBA?
>>
>>67008800
Only an American would pull out wealth as a latch ditch attempt to refute something.

>sports are only good if you need to pay loads for equipment and a pitch to play on

When you're 80 and your kids are running around with man Utd and Real Madrid shirts on. I hope you remember all your shitposting as a kid.
>>
Baseball is boring as fuck and not a team sport.
>>
>>67008788
Either way lad, you're in Europe which I also included. The part that was salty was >hurr why don't you talk about something you know about!!! le stupid American meme XD

Because I'm American I've never watched soccer/football? How do you figure? I've watched plenty actually. Been to San Jose earthquake games, watch the World Cup (one of the best sporting events 2bh and I'm not even a huge soccer fan) and the Bankshill premier league. Soccer is okay like I've said throughout this thread, but not great. I was just talking shit because I don't see why you guys suck "football's" dick so much

It's way more likely that you guys have less understanding of baseball than the average American has of soccer
>>
>>67008244
Pretty much this. Baseball is the best and comfiest live sport and radio sport, but dull as fuck on tv. Whereas football benefits tremendously from televised broadcasts, multiple camera angles, instant replay, hd, etc.
>>
>>67008830
....except you were the one pointing out equipment and I responded to that...what was your point then?

>lel stupid Americans and their money XD

Let's sperg out and chat shit about flags oi amirite mate!? XD

you ever notice how football is like the nascar of athletics?
>there's always beer commercials
>country intro song with your typical cowgirl and cowboy
>every fan is depicted in commercials as fat pizza and wing eating degenerates

mean while in baseball...
>fans are depicted as classy bow tie wearing intelligent people
>commercials generally depict baseball fans using technology and are physically fit etc etc
>>
>>67008871
I never said "haha dumb american XDDD" All I've said is that I have a tough time believing that you've watched a lot of football when you say that most of the things that the Nigel mentioned don't happen on a consistent basis. Maybe you have watched a lot of football and you just haven't seen the stuff the Nigel said, but seems unlikely.

I have very little understanding of baseball, and I've admitted it. I've not said that baseball is shit, all I've said is that I've found it boring. And I've asked you the ways it's interesting, and you haven't told me.

Also you failed to refute any of my points.
>>
>>67008871
Watch a real league? Maybe? I dunno.

Well yeah, as we've said multiple times, nobody outside of the us gives a shit about baseball. Probably couldn't name you more teams than the Yankees and Cubs.

It's a dying sport la
Meanwhile football has massive money leagues growing in China, the USA and soon to be India. It's worldwide yo, embrace it.
>>
>>67008917
go to a baseball game and sit in one of the upper decks. nothing but drunks.
>>
>>67008168
no Baseball is actually fun to play but it definitely is boring to watch
>>
>>67008912
Your logic is circular I don't understand what your point was meant to be that's all.

Nobody is calling you stupid, it's just you guys posting that.
>>
>>67008775

I was talking about stealing bases, Arthur, not hitting the ball and running to a base.

Meh. I thought you were geniunely open minded. So far you're just showing to be close minded idiot or a bant vacuum. Either way, gg.
>>
>>67008943
i know, im just saying how theyre promoted so differently
>>
>>67008959
You have what 4 bases?
So 4 points you can choose right?

So it's hardly that tough a calculation to make is my point. All you've said is "muh complexities" but nothing really seems that complex.

It's like cricket but with fewer things to think about
>>
>>67008819
I can't really explain the game in all of its details in a post or two, and even then it's just one of those things you have to get on your own

But to sum it up I would say that it's the combination of mental focus and physical skill needed to play

Also baseball is a game, within a game, within a game, ad infinitum. Each pitch is a mini game, within in a count, within an out, within an inning, within a game, within a series, within a season. Each pitch effects the next pitch. Each out the next out and so on

Also there's more variation in baseball when it comes to players and the situations they're in. For example, one runner being on a base creates a different situation than another. Different amounts and positions of runners on base, and who is hitting effects how the pitcher will pitch to that batter

I could explain these things in more depth and easier if we were in person, but it would take forever still

But I don't even care, have fun kicking your ball back and forth if you enjoy it. I'm glad you do, honestly
>>
>>67008953
>>67008959
why are you guys so fucking autistic

is it that hard to understand that people like different things

baseball is a slow game, thats fine, some people like it the way it is, they definitely need to cut down on the stupid time wasting in MLB tho

Soccer is a good sport but people take it way too seriously, its honestly a good cardio sport so I play that shit every now and then
>>
>>67008819
i think you have to have played it to understand

there's a legit challenge trying to hit a baseball, pick up speeds and pitches. as for pitching, there's a legit challenge trying to keep a hitter off balance.

in all seriousness it can be exciting and get the adrenaline going, even from just watching. but at the same time, i cant get into soccer but im sure people would say similar shit about that sport.
>>
>>67008999
I'm just here.

I didn't start this.

The thread is evidence
>>
>>67008994
>have fun kicking your ball

Why do you have to be condescending? The Nigel gave examples of exciting football moments and you called them "boring as shit" and stuff that "rarely happens". The first is an opinion, the last one was just not true.

The furthest I've gone is saying that I don't understand baseball and I haven't had fun watching it. I believe that it is fun when you get it, and I do believe that it's very tactical.

And you never refuted the big point, if football is less interesting, why is baseball so much less popular? And if it's just tradition, why are the NFL and NBA bigger than the MLB, and why is football expanding while baseball seems to be dying down.

>>67009023
I believe you. I've played the Finnish equivalent of baseball, pesäpallo, and it's fun. And even though the ball isn't thrown at you, it's still hard to hit it very well.
>>
>>67008932
>real league

Aren't you Brits always going on about your Bankshill premier league and how it's so good? Are you saying your league is shit?
>>
>>67008953
But you didn't even make a point either and you're doing the same shit

What's so great about not needing equipment then?
>>
>>67009051
Sorry I didn't get your retarded 4chan lingo. Why can't you just say bpl, it's easier and doesn't make you look like a mug.

The bpl is the best league in the world for sure. Yeah, you should watch it. Like, actually watch the league not just random games.

I mean right now we're seeing one of the craziest stories of a team in modern times (arguably ever in history) with Leicester winning it.

And you guys don't have a clue! It's sad dude.

>>67009074
Oh just do one you pedantic twat.

You're just gonna dance around points like you have done with Finland.

I've said all my side and you're just going on about running around bases tactically still.
>>
>>67008985
>Muh Complexities

I never said it was rocket science, I said it was more than hitting and running...which you later agreed with when I mentioned pitching.
>>
>>67009048
I wasn't be condescending. I was being genuine and just a tad bit cheeky

But if you want to be overly sensitive unnecessarily then I'll say I'm being condescending because you were being condescending when you implied way earlier in the thread that because I'm American I don't know shit about "football." The difference between me and you and that Brit is that I've watched plenty of "football" and understand it just fine while it's you guys who are ACTUALLY the ones talking shit about a sport you don't know about

I guess I should say that stuff tha Brit posted about things that happen in "football" happen on a regular bases, but in the span of a 90 minute game could still be considered rarely. A few "exciting" moments in a game? Oh wow
>>
>>67009149
You're so full of shit mate lmao
>>
>>67009149
Ameribro, get it into your thick skull that I didn't say that you don't understand it because you are an American. I said it because what you said made you look like someone who doesn't watch football.

I would have said the same thing to a Portuguese guy, or a Swede or a Brazilian or anyone in that situation.

How many of these "exciting" moments happen in baseball? I'm not saying moments exciting to you, because if you like the sport there surely are loads of moments, I'm talking about breathtaking moments, like the ones the Brit mentioned.

And for the love of God, could you refute my points in >>67009048?

Why would I watch the league if I'm not a big fan of soccer? I called it the Bankshill premier league because I think it's hilarious that Europeans give Americans shit for advertising in sports when your whole league is named after a FUCKING BANK! How jewed can you get?

Naming the league after a bank and having ads on the shirts and sidelines doesn't disrupt the game experience like advertisement breaks in the middle of the game.

Tfw an american said football has no tactics like american football near me. Guess they need to see them wear headsets, chew gum and throw yellow flags around.

>>
Baseball is a fun sport, and I won't get into any autistic sperg fights with Europeans who couldn't even tell you the difference between a 2seam and 4seam fb, but baseball has way less athleticism than really any sport except cricket.

When selling a sport BIG ATHLETIC feats must be caught regularly on camera.

In basketball we have niggas jumping 10 feet into the air

Every new down in football can be sold as a highlight play to asinine football fans

Its just not a sport for people who watch sports for entertainment, honestly I don't who baseball is really for other than employment opportunities to cubans

>>67009188
I've listed baseball moments in this thread that are exciting but I cant explain the whole game to you. You have to understand the game to understand why these moments are exciting and important. As to why baseball is less popular I can't say for sure, but like I said somewhere in this thread I'm sure, most people can't appreciate the subtleties of baseball and don't have the attention span for it. People like different things
>>
>>67009194
It's sponsored by the bank. Not named after it. You total muppet. A British bank at that.

It's sport, obviously there's sponsors and advertisements. However they're before and after the game.

We don't cut away for advertisements while the game is going on. And our commentators definitely don't have to shout out the sponsors either like they do your side.

Plus aren't all your teams (NBA, NFL, MLB) all massive franchises owned by big companies, not investors and a chair? And those teams are spread of gigantic areas? So there's no real community sense of pride behind a team because it's 100 miles away?

Not even getting baited into the Jew argument. But I bet you're the one with the tip missing off your dick right? Man I love not being mutilated at birth

>>
>>67009366
They both have their merits.

Football is a thousand times more easy to watch, offense goes on side and defense tries to stop them. Announcers will typically try to explain things when shit hits the fan, and football becomes really fun when the quarterback takes a sack and an actual scrum happens.

Baseball is a lot more slow, you won't know what a RBI, R, K, or any other thing being said means and you'll have to just start learning. Baseball is actually quite chaotic, runners can technically run whenever they want and its quite tricky to handle things when you catch a flyout and pablo begins booking it for home whilst jamal is rocketing to second.
>>
>>67008124

Because the 1960s is when TV really took off. The NFL's rules were literally made with tv in mind ("mandatory commercial breaks"), so naturally network execs fell over themselves trying to promote it.

One of my first thoughts as well. My dad isn't a huge hockey fan or anything, but whenever we have the odd game on he'll always bitch about how useless it was to watch before hd tv. In terms of clarity, I guess 60's football sized object = 90's puck sized object. Kind of interesting.

NBA is mostly popular among blacks , rich white and Asian kids .

Sport has also became unbearable to watch for many in the past 7ish years with lebron proving how much bullshit calls people can take before they begin to shut off the television . Now with the 3s strategy coming up it will no longer be about playing hard , balling hard because NBA has slowly placed rules that benefits the long range shooter for years now and teams like golden state know the opposing play can't so much as touch them or they'll give up a possible 2 or 3 and 1

Another perfect example is the last Pistons v cavs

The gane before was nice psychical basketball with 3s
The latest was all 3s and fouls

Basketball is definitely the 2nd-most popular in the cities, which means that it's 2nd in popular culture. Baseball is more popular in the suburbs and rural areas, so even if the number of baseball fans is higher than the number of basketball fans, baseball won't have the same presence in the media. I also think that things like sneakers and rap help make basketball even more popular, since half the shoes out there are endorsed by basketball players and every rapper wants to be a baller.

There is zero (0) health benefits unless you already suffer from a condition like phimosis. Then it's a medical procedure.

A healthy child should not have part of its body cut off without its say, it's barbaric.

As for hygiene. You shower daily right?
There you go. Any hygiene benefit removed. If you're not a disgusting cunt who doesn't wash there's no benefit.

And on top of that (which is ironic bc apparently some use it to get with girls easier, which doesn't make sense but whatever) it removes tens of thousands of nerve endings. Making sex worse.
You couldn't make this shit up.

Soccer is the least popular sport in the United States
The influx of Mexicans didn't start this past decade nor the last 2
1970s is when we saw the Hispanic group increase and Mexican take the lead in it

we've hosted not only the World Cup but the summer Olympics twice

I'm sure MLS doesn't have rising Mexican American stars and if they do I'm positive it isn't much

Mexican Americans have grown attached to baseball and Mexicans when they come over here typically pick up baseball as their first American sport due to the simple fact that soccer is not popular here and is barely televised and baseball is popular in Mexico alongside boxing and soccer but obviously not at soccer's level there

I assure you this is definitely not the case in almost any city not even LA

Basketball's popularity has been in decline when compared the past 20 years it will probably decline even further in the next 20 years

To be honest dude, I don't really see somebody getting into baseball later in life but I'm sure it can happen. At that point you don't really have the patience to learn all of the ins and outs and come to appreciate them in the same way I think. If you grow up with it it just becomes second nature and you "get it" and have that emotional investment in it. Like I'm sure Canada is with their hockey and most of the world is with "football"

If I had a video to show you I would, but I don't know. Are you looking for something that explains the game in more depth? Or game footage?

I'm on the phone so here is the best I can do
Dark blue - team names typically cities then names you know
Yellow - Runs scored , tied at that point
Red - bases , yellow fill in means it is loaded with a runner/runner in scoring position/etc. currently 2 runners on first and second
Green - how many outs there are. 3 outs and the inning is over , the other team takes a turn at swinging the bats
Gray - top of the 4th inning . Top means opposing team is swinging the bats . Bottom is when the home team takes a turn at swinging the bats . Bottom of the 9th means it is now or never to either tie the game or win it . Game can go on forever and ever until one team has more runs scored than the other at the end of the bottom inning or top if the home team has the lead
Brown - pitches thrown by the pitcher on the mound .
Red line - balls/strikes. Up to 3 balls are allowed, 4 balls and the batter walks to first base(a run can score like this) 3 strikes and the batter is out

Balls are pitches not called strikes because they didn't get in the strike zone most likely but every umpire has their own version of a strike zone sort of

>>
>>67009830

>>
>>67010146
Nah
I grew up with 3 older brothers and they all grew up watching mainly football

My father taught us all to appreciate baseball just as much

So he took us out to watch the Giants since he is a San Fran native

I personally found it to be the most boring shit ever as a child but my eldest brother got hooked on it at 14

I ended up playing some of the baseball video games instead like Ken Griffey Jr. On n64

Honestly I to this day believe if it wasn't for video games I would have never watched or much less follow any sport teams

Over time the basic things I just posted was all I knew and the rest just slowly came to me

The whole fly ball thing and balk ball all came to be slowly when I was able to witness some of it and you're always going to see a fly ball but a balk was new to me and rarely happens

Then there is the infield fly rule which is hard to understand for some and not so much for others , infield base hit was a simple thing , guy gets a base hit but it is infield because reasons(player's fault most of the time)

Yeah the basics are enough to get people by just sit back , crack open a bear or get some warm coffee and watch the game pretty much
>>
>>67010207
More power hits

It only helps the hitter

It fucks the pitcher much worse than any other position player in baseball
>>
>>67010239
Would you recommend me to get a baseball video game to try and understand that shit?
>>
>>67010207
Prehab mainly. The stress on a pitchers arm is ridiculous and they'd have a horrendously short career without steroids. Sort of similar for batters I guess. Although everyone hurfblurfs about them doing to hit homeruns but that seems wrong since they aren't carrying enough muscle mass that would require steroids.
>>
>>67010260
It helped me and believe me my attention span can be shit

This is entirely optional of course but you could either pirate a MLB 2k on PC , rent MLB the show for ps4(I recommend this if possible the game pratically holds your hand in the basics of every position to more advanced things of baseball even from free angency in road to the show mode)

>>
Football has become so popular because it is a shorter season, which makes each game matter more, it's really easy to watch/follow, and it is really easy to self insert the coaching, in that when something bad happens hindsight is 20 20, so you can just blame the coaching and say that it was a bad play call.

Baseball and American football are both boring as shit. The difference is that everyone knows and accepts that baseball is a slow, boring sport, more about the technical aspect. Whereas, football, everyone pretends it's a super exciting, always moving game. When in reality the ball is in play for a short amount of time, and most of the 2 or 3 hours of the game is used for ad space and sitting around. Both are boring games, Baseball fans just accept that they like a boring sport. Football fans have to lie to themselves.

The actual Caribbean (not tiny rocks) plays baseball

NY loves baseball more than any other sport because all other teams are such shit.
>>
>>67008822
No. It's NFL, MLB, NCAAF, NBA, in this order.
>>
>>67008124

Football: 16 regular season games. One game playoffs to get to the Super Bowl. Every game counts.

Baseball: Over 100 regular season games. Multiple games in each post season round.

Both are equal to not the the best paced games. Football can be slow like baseball but at least the NFL is time managed.

Baseball can build up more suspense especially in the playoffs/World Series than the NFL
>>
>>67008124
No sport translates as well on radio as baseball. That was why baseball was number one for so long. Football translates better on television due to the pacing, and the fact it has a set time limit, whereas a baseball game can last forever if it goes to extra innings. As television over took radio, football became more popular.
>>
>>67008137
This. It says something when you can be bored while playing this "sport". Watching pros hit the home run ball three times in a ten hour long game is pretty boring to most.

same but white sox

the blackhawks could win now until the end of time and I'd trade it for a single sox world series

fortunately it's already happened, unfortunately I was only 10, so while I remember it, I can't say I was a huge fan. So hopefully it happens again

hockey is an awful sport, but if you have a rooting interest then the playoffs are definitely exciting as fuck. But still a shitty sport, couldn't be arsed to watch any regular season games, the whole sport is just a bunch of chaos.

Wrong.

Football didn't overtake Baseball until the early 2000s. Get your shit straight, retard.

It's the truth.

Baseball was still king through the 80s. The 90s was interesting in that the NBA rode the Lakers/Celtics craze of the 80s to a peak during the Jordan reign. There was nothing bigger than the NBA on NBC which began to challenge the NFL directly for Sunday viewing. For about ten years there was a 3 way battle with the NBA gaining a slight edge.

And then Jordan retired and the NBA fell off significantly. Many of those fans moved to the NFL and solidified it as America's favorite game.

Now you know = )
>>
>>67013842
I'd say baseball had the edge over football up until the strike in the '90s

Football took over from there.
>>
>>67014806
Jordan took over from there.

>>67014157
I'd say baseball was officially surpassed somewhere around the end of the 90's yankee dynasty/heart of the steroird era and the start of the peyton/brady era

Most sports are boring desu. It you don't have a vested interest in the team or are't at least gambling/fantasy/etc team sports are pretty unwatchable.

Pete Rozelle was instrumental in profit sharing and getting television coverage for the entire league, not just major markets. He also merged the AFL and the NFL into one league, thus creating the Super Bowl. He literally took a sport people were semi interested and made it into the most watch sport in America. He's the GOAT commissioner.

Baseball is our second most popular sport, although you're right, it's a HUGE difference. Mexico City has three soccer teams which seat each two weeks at least 50,000 fans, while their baseball team seats 3,000 fans on average. This is a city of 20 million """people"""".

NBA is still in third place (4th if you count college football).

MLB is closer to catching the NFL than the NBA is to catching MLB.
>>
>>67008346
Pitching.
Sacrifice plays.
Hit-and-runs/steals.
Taking pitches.
Fielding shifts.

There are plenty of tactical situations in baseball.

It's all smoke and mirrors, bro. I'm a baseball fan too.

American youth care more about soccer, basketball and e-sports than they do about baseball. The baby boomers won't be around to prop the league up forever sadly.
