I would say he is a good defender. He isn't a great one, like Peyton or Jordan, but he has improved enough defensively where I think he is considered good or at least above average for his position.
He has lead the league in total steals for 2 straight seasons and his Defensive Win Shares for the past 3 seasons has been 4 to 4.1, which is pretty good and consistent. He won't be making any all defensive teams for sure, but he has gotten a lot better.
