That's some genuinely fantastic hypocrisy there. Calling someone else cynical and in the same sentence proving yourself to be cynical by assuming it's all a PR stunt, and he doesn't actually like doing it. He donated over £150,000 to fund a center that treated his mother for cancer. It may have been for PR, but that kind of act seems genuine to me, however I'm not an angry internet cynic like you though.
You do realise that they get a ridiculous amount of attention. Sure, he could make all these donations completely anonymously, but he often gets involved with fans so there's no real chance of him doing this without it being known. I would imagine if he really didn't care, he'd just make large donations without ever actually visiting fans or the people he donates to, and sit back and lap up the attention.
Sure, it's not as much as some of the biggest philanthropists in the world, but he's donated a fair bit. Perhaps they do care a bit too much about what people think of them, but to be fair, when you're in that position, and will have millions of people judge you, and obsess over you, I'd rather make sure they liked me than not give a shit and have everyone hate me.
