For a while (I personally remember seeing anti-Zidane butthurt as far back as 2010) Zinedine Zidane has been one surprisingly controversial sports figure in /sp/ discussion as most of the footie fans here grew up during his peak period which saw him become of the worlds most celebrated and idolized athletes. However, there is a sizable minority of anons who insist mightily that Zidane is an obscenely overrated player whose unimpressive performances have been entirely ignored largely because of the sporting world's rosy nostalgia, and he really ought to be brought down a few notches.
The Zidane arguments came to a head sometime in summer of 2015 at which point people would begin to reply to any pro-Zidane posts with , ">i rate Zidane". The meme soon took off (after a period of being forced tbhfam) and became its own bona-fide shitpost. Other posters soon began to replace Zidane with any other equally controversial athlete in different sports.
