I'm still struggling to digest the news regarding James Taylor and his retirement from cricket to due a heart condition. I therefore wanted to share my thoughts since Taylor has become one of my favourite players, but I also respected the trajectory which his career took. (Here is the article on ESPN cricinfo: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/997033.html)
I should start off by saying that I am from South Africa, and therefore also a supporter of the SA cricket team, the Proteas. However, I have avidly followed English Cricket when I developed an insatiable love for the game back in 2007 - I loved watching their home test series the last couple years, and I think it's fair to say that I support them just as much as the Proteas. (I especially love their commentators, Botham, Atherton, Nasser - they're all really insightful) When I started watching England, there was always some flair in their team in the form of Pietersen, Flintoff, Broad, Prior and Swann, but also a touch of class from other players like Anderson, Vaughn, Cook and Bell. I loved the balance their side had, but now I think they have one of the most exciting teams in the world and their future looks solid with Root, Buttler and Stokes.
Though these players are what one would probably call the superstars and showstoppers of the team at the moment, I always had a soft spot for James Taylor. He made his debut against the Proteas back in 2012, still batting with that Kumar Sangakarra bike helmet, and I remember how KP was smashing us all around and Taylor was just the perfect foil for him, staying calm and composed, though he didn't score too many runs. I remember he was dropped after a while, but came back having done some strength work and he clearly had developed his game around him being a touch player - especially his running between the wickets was excellent. It was during the ODI series against Australia last year that he became on of my favourites. Coming from a country where AB de Villiers just decimates some bowling attacks and scored the fasted ODI century last year, I appreciated Taylor's first ODI hundred even more than some of the smashing that goes on nowadays. On a slow wicket, I think he hit about 9 or 10 fours in his century, but still had a strike rate of 80+, and it was easily one of the best innings I've watched, considering that he wasn't really labelled an ODI player. I watched the whole innings - and man, I thought it was special and this guy had big match temperament (I believe this was a must-win game for England to stay alive in the series).
England toured to South Africa at the end of last year, and Taylor made a fantastic 70 odd in the first test at Durban. I so badly wanted him to score his first test century against us, I think it would have been such a coming of age moment. But still, I found it so admirable the maturity he showed in coming back into the new England set-up, developing his game, and clearly putting in the hard yards. When the tour ended (and England won the series), I was just so amped to see England play again, partly to see Taylor score his first test century; it was one of those careers that I just wanted to follow and be able to say I saw most of his brilliant innings.
When I saw the news this morning, it was hart breaking. I cannot imagine how one feels after hearing you have to retire with such a bright future ahead of you. The point of this post is more to share my memories of a player whom I consider would've been a superstar in his own right, someone who played his own brand of cricket and was determined to succeed with that. He was classy, had a deft touch and a calmness about him that I found soothing - it's also this idea that most people looked down on him because of his small stature, but he was starting to prove all the doubters wrong, showing his grit and determination. Like I said, I'm struggling to digest this news, I really feel for him as a person and just cannot imagine the disruption that this would cause in one's life. But in some ways, I feel a different type of sadness in that I will never see him fulfil his true potential as a cricketer.
