>I Remember my first meeting with the chairman when I arrived at Leicester City this summer. He sat down with me and said, “Claudio, this is a very important year for the club. It is very important for us to stay in the Premier League. We have to stay safe.”

>My reply was, “Okay, sure. We’ll work hard on the training ground and try to achieve this.”

>Forty points. That was the goal. That was the total we needed to stay in the first division, to give our fans another season of Premier League football.

>Back then, I did not dream that I would open the paper on April 4 and see Leicester City at the top of the table with 69 points. Last year on this same day, the club was at the bottom of the table.

>Unbelievable.

>This player Kanté, he was running so hard that I thought he must have a pack full of batteries hidden in his shorts. He never stopped running in training.

>I had to tell him, “Hey, N’Golo, slow down. Slow down. Don’t run after the ball every time, okay?”

>He says to me, “Yes, boss. Yes. Okay.”

>Ten seconds later, I look over and he’s running again.

>I tell him, “One day, I’m going to see you cross the ball, and then finish the cross with a header yourself.”

>So finally, before the game against Crystal Palace, I said, “Come on boys, come on. I offer you a pizza if you get a clean sheet.”

>Of course, my players made a clean sheet against Crystal Palace. One-nil.

>So I stood by our deal and took my players to Peter Pizzeria in Leicester City Square. But I had a surprise for them when we got there. I said, “You have to work for everything. You work for your pizza, too. We will make our own.”

>Just a few years ago, many of my players were in the lower leagues. Vardy was working in a factory. Kanté was in the third tier of the French league. Mahrez was in the French fourth division.

Another interview about his philosophy at Leicester.

>When speaking to the players, I realised they were afraid of Italian tactical approaches. What football means to an Italian coach is tactics, trying to control the game by following the ideas and systems of the manager. You talk about football a lot.

>They didn't seem convinced and neither was I. I have a lot of admiration for those who build new tactical systems, but I always thought the most important thing a good Coach must do is build the team around the characteristics of his players.

You could really attribute this success to a number of factors, all of which probably have something to do with it:

Luck: I mean to get on a run of form like this requires a bit of luck, and once you're on that run, everything is easier - you have the psychological advantage in every game

Co-incidental decline of top teams: Again, luck, that during this season, all the top teams have been off the pace. Chelsea and City were obviously the best last season and this season they have both faltered.

Hunger: These players obviously have a lot to prove. The run of form they managed to string together at the end of last season would have given them a lot of confidence too.

Consistency: Any time you ask Sir Alex Ferguson about why he was so successful with Man U he will ALWAYS mention one word: "consistency". With Leicester, they have the same spine of the team that they've had the last few years - the same team that won promotion, and the same team that fought back to cling on in the Premier League.

English spine: They've got an English spine and arguably that means they are hungrier and more determined for success than foreign players (although of course the foreign Leicester players at the moment are excellent).

Balance: Their most expensive signing is Okazaki at £7 mil if I remember, and he's not a hugely important player (impact sub really). The point is that all of these players are not expensive, which means they are more humble, and more likely to gel together because they are all on the same sort of level. Characters like Wayne Rooney on £300k a week can be divisive.

Money: Money also plays a bit of a factor I think, since they got bought out by that Thai guy. It's allowed them to attract a little bit more talent, and of course pay for top notch training facilities and equipment etc. And of course it allowed them to bring in Ranieri. To these ex-Championship players, having an ex-Chelsea manager must have been a big deal.

..............Not to jinx it, but looking at both our point margin and Tot'n'ham's upcoming fixtures, I think we have reached a point at which we can now breath easy. There are only two matches to worry about. the other four looking like possible wins / easy draws. It will be one heck of a lottery win for us to lose all six and for Tottenham to win all 18 points.

Also, they'd have to lose their next three games (Sunderland, West Ham, Swansea) and Spurs win (Man Utd, Stoke, WBA) before they'd be knocked off the top spot.
