Most ski accidents happen when the skier loses control. That stuff isn't pretty, and you can smack into other things at ridiculously high speeds.

I lived for 5 years in the Patagonia as a rescue specialist for some ski resorts. The main problem it's not only that due to the low temperature your kidneys are much more vulnerable and you are asking your body to segregate much more adrenaline which will affect your immune system. that, summed to the fact that skiiers go at extremely high speeds with more paraphernalia, means that overall they are more propense to have more disastrous falls than, say, snowboarding.
i want to believe that schumi got help on his way in a heartbeat, because if someone is on a critical condition in such a extreme temperature even small wounds can become life-threatening.
