Here in Italy, youth sports aren't associated with schools, they're independent societies like gyms and minor league teams. We didn't have a high school football team, we had a city league in which every boy in class was in a different team, and every week the day after the matches it's shittalking time, recrimination time, rivalry time instead of school unity.

in the 70s and 80s, sort of, but those cliches are obviously still played up heavily in films for effect. nowadays the cultural landscape is pretty much completely different, cliques didnt really exist at my high school and there were just as many popular non-athletes as there were varsity players. as far as college goes im assuming most of the cliches in film youre referring to involve fraternal life which is nowhere near as big as it was 30 years. i say this as a greek alumni, i mean its still there and some schools have a much heavier greek presence than others but for the most part GDI life is much more prevalent. fraternities and sororities are really concerned with their image now because of a) increasing public/media scrutiny leading to b) much higher accountability to the university, which is why you wont really see the ridiculous hazing and over the top drinking practices around anymore.
