I had a little free time between jobs in the spring of 2013 and I decided to give the IPL a try despite having never watched cricket before. The match I watched was between PWI and SRH. I didn't have a full grasp of the rules at the time but got to following and looking up rules constantly. I was particularly gripped by the exciting finishes and how close they can be. I decided to pick SRH as my team mainly because I thought they were a particularly exciting team especially as it was their debut season. I've been following IPL ever since and I'm particularly excited for this season as Jos Buttler joins the IPL albeit for MI.
I'm an Englishman btw, albeit of Chinese descent. Getting into the IPL has led me to discover the Ashes that year and gain an appreciation for the longer forms of the game too.

I know this is already discussed here and most of the people already know about this but I wanted to dig deeper and find interviews and more details about what exactly happened. What was his thinking and mental situation.
For people who do not what happened, 18 year old Kohli was batting to save New Delhi. On day 2 at stumps his side was at 103/5, 343 runs behind Karnataka's first innings total. Kohli was batting at 40. His father was not well and he passed away overnight at around 2:30AM. His family did not wake him up and he found out about it in the morning. He decided he will go back and continue batting. He ended up scoring 90 runs and was incorrectly given out. But by then his team was out of the woods and on track to avoid the follow on. After that he went straight to the cremation grounds.

Mom: He was back home after playing and went to sleep since he was very tired. His father was very sick and had brain hemorrhage. He pasted away at 2:30AM but we did not tell Kohli until he woke up. But its fine, everything has a time, may be it was in his destiny, may be if he might have backed out all this would not have happened.

Kohli: That incident is very important in my life because I learnt alot from it and was the toughest time for me. But I don't know what feeling I had and I went and played.
Host: Explain the feeling for the audience everything?
Kohli: If you have a passion about something there is nothing that stop you. Cricket is everything for me and has been since my childhood. So when this incident happened obviously I was in shock for me and everyone but I talked to my family and asked permission to play. They said its fine you can go and play its you decision.
Host: Explains his father died at 2:30 when he was 17(actually 18) and non out on 40.
Kohli: So yes, I went alone to the ground. I usually go with Ishant Sharma who was my team mate and we used to joke around alot. I obviously was in shock, so I didnt talk to him much. So he asked what happened and I told him. He then told about it to the entire team and everyone told me its your decision. If you want to play you can play if not you can go home. But I knew from inside I have to play and if I am playing a match I have to continue playing. So I played that day and got out at 90 and saved the team from losing. That day I learnt alot in life, if you are dedicated towards something in life you should be completely dedicated towards it and nothing should distract you from it.
Host: This is a rare example of a 17 year old(actually 18) goes out to play and goes straight to the funeral after that match.
Kohli: Yes, I went to the funeral straight after the match. Like I dont know what happened to me the entire day. The only time I was in my senses was while I was batting, apart from that I had no clue what was happening. Like I said was a very tough time and still recall it till today. I still get confidence from the situation, whenever I am stuck in a tough situation I think about those times and think about how I dealth with the toughest situation of my life. I get alot of strength from it.
Host: You said a great thing and how you handled the toughest situation of you life and hopefully you do the same for the country.
Kohli: Hopefully I can do that
Summary-
We all know this guy is an unreal cricketer but he also has a unreal passion for the game. I honestly don't know how to feel about the incident. But what I do know is Kohli is one badass bhenchod and nothing can stop him. He probably trains the hardest and longest to get better at his skills. He absolutely hates getting out without finishing the job and will give his everything to cricket. No wonder he is one of the best batsman in the world while other more talented people (Read Rohit Sharma) are still struggling. Kohli handling pressure in chases and tough situations is no fluke. He was mentally built for this and this incident has a huge factor on it.
