Most of the F1 drivers do those to train so I imagine a number would do those seriously where as a few would just do there hobbies: Hamilton (Being a cunt), Alguersuari (DJ), Grosjean (Swiss Banker), Rosberg (Ice Cream shop owner), Ricciardo (Heavy metal artist)

The pain made me hallucinatory. I could hear the grinding of metal constantly in the aftermath, this ringing didn't stop. The marshall thought I had died. Thankfully the damage meant I was easy to get to, cutting the co driver out took ages. He wasn't as badly injured but they first at thought he had broken his back.

My girlfriend came to visit me in hospital and looked around the room and didn't recognise me, I was covered in so many things and my face was wrapped up. She paced the room looking for me then stormed out to say to a nurse I wasn't there. The nurse led her back in then she started screaming. I was constantly full of different medicines for different thing and the surgeries just blurred into one.

"a photographer on-scene described as "as gruesome a wreck as I can ever recall".In video footage taken at the scene of the accident, the first rescuer is initially shown running to the car, then immediately turning away after seeing Phillips' body and realizing the hopelessness of any attempt at resuscitation. The track was littered with car debris, blood, and numerous body parts, necessitating a complete and lengthy red flag while track officials wearing surgical gloves placed white sheets over various body parts in the vicinity of the crash. The driver's head - still in the racing helmet - was found at the entrance of the pit road, and one of his hands was found suspended in the retaining fence."

nascar is a boring sport, but they've come up with some serious safety innovations
>>
>>66444952
Was just about to post it. I saw it on tv back then and was rather bummed as he was one of my favorite drivers.

"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers...had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction. While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact...I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."

Yes, pretty much everything NASCAR has ever implemented in the name of safety was an Indycar innovation.
Hell, the Indycars today are made of stronger stuff than the present Grand Prix cars, but that's because they have to be. F1 isn't disintigrating into catch fencing.

Pretty standard safety position to take, cross arms and hang on to seat belts. To protect from arms being caught outside the cockpit or on the steering wheel/column and in case of seat belt failure you're giving yourself a halfway chance of being able to hold yourself inside and not get flung out the cockpit.

Back before the 70s open seat racing used to not have seat belts because it was preferable to be flung out the car in case of an accident and not get trapped or crunched up in the wreckage

"Whilst in his opinion he had only sustained a sore ankle, he was taken to the nearby Bellaria-Igea Marina hospital, and after medical checks he was forbidden to start by FIA Medical Delegate Sid Watkins. For the remainder of the weekend Piquet worked as a guest commentator on Italian television. Years later he revealed that he was "never quite right" after the accident, suffering headaches and sometimes double vision and for the rest of the 1987 season secretly visited the hospital for treatment. He did this in secret for fear that he would not be allowed to race either by Williams or Watkins."

anything the FIA can do to get people to give even the slightest shit about Formula E

the top speed of those cars is 123mph, they are SLLLOOOOWWWWW compared to F1....shit, even Formula Renault is faster than Formula E

thats why the courses they run are mostly 2 mile street courses, so they look fast, if they went around tracks like Spa or Bahrain they would be slower than the Porsche Cup support races

yeah, Formula E is a joke, it's got A1GP written all over it

>>

you can only do so much with an electric motor, man

also, their batteries are only good for 90 minutes, hence why they have short races
>>
>>66485924

well, consider this, it's an electric motor, yes, but it still uses a conventional sequential gearbox and transmission

i still think making them direct drive rear wheel drive would be a better idea, but, what do i know.
>>
>>66486033

WTF!?

that kills the whole purpose!

tesla is direct drive, and they have a single "gear" and they can get up to 160mph

leave it to the FIA to fuck a good concept up, thats why their batteries are so shit,
>>
>>66485881

>123

nice try

the straight line speed of a formula E car is closer to 97-101mph

they are slower around donnington than a Formula Ford car

let that sink in
>>
>>66486092
>97-101mph
That's slower than old Formula Vee cars. Pathetic.
>>
>>66430627
Any aero design would receive a green light.
Do you want closed wheels and cockpit? You have it!
Fan turbine to generate maximum downforce? Of course!
Pilots fainting from extreme G-force? Eh, it's quite possible. Maybe teams would make use of a weaker and more fuel efficient motor to balance that.
>>
>>66486141

yeah, go watch a Formula E race on youtube (they upload almost every single race in it's un-edited entirety on the official channel), notice how it's 95% turns and twists, and only 1 or 2 straights

they want to make the cars LOOK fast, but they aren't

i'm not saying electric cars in general can't be fast, but

Electric Motor + adding resistance and weight by means of a transmission meant for a straight 4 or v6 engine + gearbox = Slow car
>>
>>66431195

F1 was like that in the late 70's and up to the mid 80's with the turbos, the FIA pretty much let teams do whatever the fuck they wanted

the Lotus 90T (forget the name and on my phone so i'm too lazy to look it up) was pushing around 1,040bhp and was only a 4 cylinder engine

turbos are fun to play with, man, and can get even a 3-banger to push out 400hp
>>
>>66486207
>the FIA pretty much let teams do whatever the fuck they wanted
Not exactly, the rules were pretty strict, they let the teams play a bit with the technology but they were pretty swift with the banhammer.

>was pushing around 1,040bhp and was only a 4 cylinder engine
It was the Lotus 98T but that was normal output for turbo engines in qualifying. The BMW engine in the Brabham BT52 put out almost 1500hp in qualifying spec.
>>
>>66486207

>straight 3 pushing 400HP

friend of mine won a Smart car in a poker tournament and didn't want to keep it (he had no use for it) so he gave it to me to play around with, me and him put a turbo on it and played with the engine a bit, took it to a dyno and managed to get 397bhp out of it, over-heated the fucker too.

>>
>>66486421
ha, no,

the engine wasn't stock, it was a modified engine, without the turbo it would probasbly do...maybe 100-120hp

we lifted it from a Geo Metro and made it fit
>>
>>66486454
Ah, that explains it. I've seen Smarts with heavily tuned stock engines reach nearly 200hp before grenading so I was finding it a bit strange.

>Another driver, David Purley, upon witnessing the crash of his personal friend, abandoned his own race and pulled over in a desperate and valiant attempt to rescue Williamson. He ran across the track to Williamson's car and tried to turn it upright. When no-one came to help, he crossed the track, grabbed a fire extinguisher from a marshal, and returned to the engulfed car. He emptied it on the car and signalled for others to help. Purley's efforts to turn the car upright and extinguish the flames were in vain as he received no help from nearby track marshals or emergency workers who merely stood by and looked on, in spite of attempts to encourage them, and other passing drivers, to come to his aid. Purley later stated he could hear Williamson's screams from underneath the car, but by the time the first fire engine arrived and the fire was extinguished, Williamson had died of asphyxiation. As most racers mistakenly identified Purley as the driver of the crashed car, and therefore thought the burning car to be empty, none of them stopped to help and the race continued, even as Purley stood on the circuit and gestured with his hands for them to stop.

You don't have many choices on certain tracks. You have to hope either you or your spotter can find a gap in the chaos.
>>
>>66503218
"As well as a huge and sustained toll on their mental faculties, courage and general fitness levels, for two hours tomorrow afternoon drivers will frequently be exposed to a pressure that will never be experienced by most spectators: g-forces of a kind that would push ordinary mortals to the verge of lapsed consciousness.
G-force is the pressure that gravity exerts on an object when it is accelerating relative to freefall - and grand prix drivers are extraordinary athletes who can withstand these stressful forces while making crucial, split-second decisions.
Imagine trying to make a lightning-quick manoeuvre while upside down on a roller coaster when there are other roller coasters on the same track…
Motorsport's g-force spectrum ranges from 2g - a high-speed corner in a sports car, perhaps - to the 5.3g of a top-fuel dragster, which can accelerate from 0-100mph in less than a second.
>>
>>66503218
One of Monaghan's drivers is chiselled Australian Mark Webber, who says: "G-force makes it feel as though your body is being squeezed. In a fast corner the g-force comes on laterally as we go around, so your ribs, hip and neck get squeezed into the edge of the seat. You've got to get used to that. The force comes on slowly and peaks in the middle of the corner."
But when you hit the brake pedal, the g levels soars up and down. "That feeling is completely different," Webber says. "You hit the brakes very, very hard, so the g‑force is extremely high but goes away quickly."
Breath control is crucial - you cannot breathe freely above 3g because to do so would expose you to the risk of passing out. To prevent blood leaving your brain, you have to tense up.
"When you're experiencing g-force it can be hard to breathe normally," Webber says, "especially in a long, fast corner. It can make you a bit weaker because sometimes you have to hold your breath. You need to be strong to cope."
It demands incredible core fitness, stamina and concentration - though people can have wildly different g‑force tolerances. An obese man might have better g fitness than someone lean and fit, because his circulation limits his blood flow. The flip side, of course, is that he is more likely to keel over at the controls because of a heart attack."
