New York is a basketball state, fuck you.
>>
Pretty sure Virginia has a lot of Steelers/Skins fans in it
>>
>>66417460
no
>>
>>66417411
Based on amount of fans or team performances per sport?
>>
>>66417798
Just vague prominence. I factored in things like the most successful sports team in the state, history in the state, popularity at the pro and college level, and amount of teams in a sport. Though, like I said, not too scientific terms here.
>>
Football for every state
>>
Alaska is basketball, Hawaii probably football.
>>
>>66417460
Anything but
>>
Baseball in Illinois
>>
>>66417863
Alaska is a hockey state, dummy. The only successful pro team here plays hockey.
>>
I can't imagine what sport Virginia would be if not football.
Jersey and Connecticut might be baseball too.
Tbh I could understand if one or two of those midwestern states were wrestling.

>>66417460
No
>>
>>66417900
I was leaning towards this, especially with the Cubs doing so well these days and the rivalry between them and the Cardinals becoming more prominent as well, but in the end I feel like football, both the Bears and the Illini as well as the large following of Notre Dame in Chicago was more prominent.
>>
>>66417913
I was just sticking to the big 4 for these, but yeah, another sport could be more popular. Dog sledding in Alaska maybe?
>>
>>66417900
>>66417932

I'll put it like this: in states like Texas, if you go to a picnic or an outdoor event with family, there's always a football being tossed around.

In Illinois, every son and dad has a glove and baseball to toss around.
>>
>>66417946
I see that you factored in success of pro teams for some reason so I think I'm just gonna abandon thread because your whole methodology is silly.
>>
>>66417460
That's the most wrong thing I have ever heard
>>
>>66417966
But the success at the pro level is one of the key indicators of prominence. It exposes your sport to the local populace and associates your state or area with the sport in regards to your state.

But yeah, like I said, this is all mostly my opinion to stimulate discussion.
>>
>>66417411
New Jersey is a baseball state for sure
>>
>>66417996
If you're evaluating popularity then evaluate popularity, not success.
>>
Literally every state is a football state, don't be silly.
>>
>>66418062
Popularity and success are linked, I would argue. Just look at the Yankees.
>>
>>66417411
I would call California a baseball state
>>
>>66418042
Idk Football and Hockey are huge too
>>
>>66418122
I was thinking this as well, between the success the Dodgers, Giants, and A's have all had in their history. However, I concluded that the Lakers and UCLA along with the recent popularity and success of the Warriors, basketball seems to have a slight edge in California.
>>
Michigan is hockey. The Lions are awful and the entire UP does not care about them. I can think of at least 8 D1 hockey programs off the top of my head, not to mention all the junior and minor league teams. Then there are the Red Wings who are the most successful pro of the Detroit 4. Even outdoor college games sell out at the 100,00 seat big house. People play in leagues year round, there are indoor roller hockey leagues in addition to ice leagues in the summer. People might talk about football a lot, but in terms of number of teams supported and numbers of players who carry on with the sport well into adulthood, Its hockey and its not even close.
>>
>>66418170
I believe it. Are you from the UP?
>>
>>66418120
Of course there's a correlation but it's not nearly 1:1. Success isn't as good an indicator of popularity as popularity is.
>>
>>66418194
Of course, but I did account for both in the end.
>>
>>66418122
>>66418169
baseball > basketball in califironia

go to bed gramps
>>
>>66418170
As someone who's admittedly never been to Michigan, this does pretty much conform to my general view of Michigan.
>>
>>66417411
You got Missouri correct.

Baseball will forever be king here.
>>
>>66418191
Originally, I live in under the bridge now though. Lots of packers fans up north, but a lot of schools can't even field a full team for football. They play 8-man football, really goofy.
>>
>>66418271
I still can't believe the fucking Royals won the World Series.
Also, that must have been a horrible time. Imagine being in the middle of that throng with no elbow room and no air to breathe, about an hour's shimmy away from the nearest exit.
>>
>>66418271
Gotta love the state for it.

>>
Jersey is football
everyone is either a diehard Eagles or Giants fan
>>
>>66419198
NFL is the biggest sport for sure, but CFB has zero presence and baseball is bigger here than in most places.
>>
>>66419198
Or a turbo-nigger Cowboys fan for no reason at all
>>
Just something interesting I've noticed. College baseball seems to be the biggest in the south. The SEC has won a number of College World Series and there are other notable Southern teams that are usually powerhouses, like Tulane and Clemson. Can any Southern anons tell me how popular baseball is down there?
>>
>>66417411
Virginia likes CBB and football. A lot.

t. Virginian
>>
Nevada here the north is all about football the south loves basketball
>>
>>66419228
Hockey too

And many of us are Jets fans btw
>>
>>66417911
Tell us of your Alaskan life m8
>>
>>66417863
>>66417911

Everyone in rural Alaska plays basketball, there's literally nothing else to do, and the city teams are all competitive. Look it up if you don't believe me. Hockey's nowhere near as king as it is in a place like Minnesota.
>>
New York is a basketball state, both NBA and CBB. Every kid here plays basketball with friends and their dad.
>>
>>66419821
Yeah, I was thinking this would probably be second. Just thinking of the playground ball that occurs in New York City...

Every state that aligned with the confederacy during the civil war is football. Every state that aligned with the union or was added after the civil war is a baseball state. If your state is basically canada, then it's a hockey state.

There is no "basketball state" every other sport is irrelevant

Minnesota is football. Hockey is much more popular here than most of the rest of the country but it's still playing second fiddle.
>>
>>66419282
There is a preference for College Baseball over the MLB in the South just like CFB over the NFL. This due to the lack of professional teams in the South.

Baseball is firmly in between Football and Basketball in terms of popularity
>>
>>66417411
I don't know about Missouri, despite the big picture of a ton of people at the World Series, Football is fucking huge here especially the farther south you go. We definitely are more baseball than most states, though. Borderline for sure.

Besides, North and South Missouri are basically two states culturally, anyway.
>>
>>66421114
All these sports, especially football, are popular nationwide. You could make the case for football for every state, I'd say, but where's the fun in that.
>>
>>66421051
Yeah, this. Hockey is by no means unpopular, but the eternal Vikings love/hate is remarkably strong, especially when compounded with Packers rivalry almost literally next door.

UofMN AD doesnt get fired if the football coach sucks. He gets fired if the hockey team sucks.

Illinois is a basketball state, everything else looks more or less right (Florida could arguably be a baseball state though)
>>
>>66421114
>Besides, North and South Missouri are basically two states culturally, anyway.

You could make that argument for a lot of states (NYC area vs upstate New York, Chicagoland vs Springfield, South Florida vs Jacksonville Rednecks, etc)
>>
>>66417411
boring but I would say that every state is a football state if it's about fans

only ones that might be baseball are missouri and perhaps florida because of all the old people. Same might apply to arizona I guess

Hockey

I am from Michigan. We played everything. The same kid on your mites team is probably wearing a Ludington Gus Macker t-shirt under his pads and has baseball practice in a few hours. Parents are the same way - get disappointed by the Tigers, bitch about the Lions, bandwagon the Pistons, and watch hockey more closely after football season.

Like the south, Michigan and Ohio seem to care more about college football than the pros although there is a lot of overlap of the fanbases.

I'm a native San Diegan.

I can't speak for the rest of the state but people bangwagon like a mother fucker here.

Lakers win the ship? Kobe jerseys everywhere/

Kings win the cup? Kings shit everywhere.

Giants win the series? Giants caps everywhere.

Whichever Cali team wins the Super Bowl next will have the same shit happen.

I'd say as far as sports loyalties go I'd say 67% of the population actually gives a damn about sports and the rest are in it for the memes.

>muh hockey at all levels
nah, fuck off, the most popular teams in michigan are the college football ones and the lions.
same for minnesota with the vikings

not too sure about virginia, I figured they like the redskins more than virginia and VCU basketball, I don't know

the red sox are king in new england. Maybe if only the patriots had gotten good it would be a different story by now, but the red sox have gotten good as well. hockey is also popular, but new england is crazy about the red sox.

new york gets behind the yankees and mets tremendously when they're winning, and the yankees are pretty often winning. same for new jersey but with the phils as well

missouri is cardinals, and now royals I guess

Illinois is close between football and baseball. The southern half is all cardinals, the northern half and chicago is usually bears first, though the cubs have strong following as well. And right now that the cubs are actually good and will be good for years to come I'd give baseball the edge.

California is tough. Football, baseball and basketball can all make strong cases. Whoever is best at the moment then, which means the warriors now. Nevada is basically california. All success equal, football would be at the top.
not sure about oregon, between ducks football and the trail blazers

arizona is interesting, the state is up for grabs I'd say. If either the suns or cardinals could put it together consistently. At this moment I'd say baseball is #1, not really because of the diamondbacks, though there is significant hype around them for this season, but from all the transplants from the midwest, NY and California, and they have spring training

I've lived in Columbus and Cleveland and neither cares about baseball. Lots of casuals in Cleveland "like" the Indians, but 17k a game attendance (29th of 30 teams) speaks for itself.

Meanwhile the Browns are far and away the most cared-about sports team in Cleveland despite being a trainwreck. And the whole state obviously loves OSU football. High school football is also way more popular than high school baseball.

Maybe they like baseball more in Cincy, idk. But that's basically Kentucky and not really Ohio anyway.
>>
>>66437221
Minnesota is pretty much known as that, yes.

General hockey is way more popular than general football.

If your best argument otherwise is looking at tv ratings for a Vikings vs Packers game versus a meme Wild vs Oilers game your view is way too small and you aren't aware of the hockey culture in the state.

I'm not speaking on behalf of any other state, just the one I was born and raised in.
