if fighting is such an important part of the game, why don't the franchises have actual martial art sessions in their training schedule? The player would considerably improve their fighting skill and would be much more efficient at it, rather than just shaking their arms in the air.

I was thinking of this this morning. Fighting can't be 'removed' but you can increase the penalty. If you get in a fight, you are out of that game. Then, you need a legit reason to do it, not I got rocked and now I'm emotional. This would remove a lot of head cases from the game. Can't control your emotion, go do MMA.

Buncha plebs who never played at a competitive level ITT. Hockey will always have big defenders that can lay crushing hits on a smaller scorer that are only a little dirty getting them only 2 mins. Or if they are real dicks, jabs elbows in the corners, sloo foot when the refs are turned, slash ankles etc. The refs can't catch it all, but your team's goon can. The threat of getting in a fight, which doesn't hurt as bad as a street fight(since you cant step into a punch as much), is doing as much to regulate the cleanliness off play as much as refs do. Watch mic'd up fights, there is so much respect even after beating the shit out of each other. Fuck anyone who wants fighting gone

Pretty much this. The players themselves don't want it removed. Like buddy said, it started as a way for the players to police and regulate the game themselves. It's called 'the code', and honor plays a big part of it. I'm not being dramatic, google it. A good example of the code in motion from the current season, for non-hockey fans:

I think goons should be left to the previous era (as they essentially are) but fighting should still be allowed. The current level of fighting is fine. Really only happens when emotion is high or niggers are involved (Nurse).

The NHL uses a smaller rink to cause more friction between players and a "faster" game. Its an intentional design that is going to force "bad blood" between some players at time. The NHL chooses not to be boring like the IIHF or women's hockey.

with all this emphasis on head injuries in sports, do you actually think this isnt going to happen? you have to wear your helmet with a visor to fight people nowadays, ffs. in the ahl, you get kicked out of the game after 2 fights. in junior hockey you get kicked out after 1 fight. the nhl tends to use the ahl as a test ground for new rules, so whos to say this isnt part of the plan.

Saw it happen twice while I was playing. Not saying it would happen at the pro level, but the tensions get real fucking high, and I'm sure the threat of getting taken out by an enforcer weren't looming we'd see a lot more hotheads doing stupid shit like Avery, and NBA style showboating.
