I lived in Berlin for 6 months. Place is dirty, covered in graffiti and full of aggressive gypsies. Rent is pretty cheap for a major city but people live in little apartments, or maybe homes if you're super rich but its like a rich Berliner lives like a middle class American.

The cost of living in the US and Canada is so low because the cost of labour (ie wages) is so low. If these things are high it can also mean that everyone is doing well. Housing is expensive where it is used as an investment as well as place of residence, but also because there is much less land available in Europe compared to the US.
