It exists for 2 reasons:
1. So that fans of teams that are good but not mega-rich can still see how their team measures up against foreign teams at a similar level.
2. To keep Tottenham Hotspur out of the Champions League.

As a Sporting fan who just got home from the stadium, this post helped me hate Germans a bit less.
It's a fun continental contest, and for some us a comfier one as it's free of all the rabid glory-hunting bandwagoning of the more prestigious CL.
Though it was a more prestigious competition back during the UEFA Cup days.... it seems as though clubs don't take as seriously as they once did.

It's mostly English teams that don't take it seriously because of the stupid scheduling in England.
Though some teams from other countries seem to think they are too good to take it seriously, see Sporting, Napoli.
In Germany most teams take it seriously, aside from the money teams like Wolfsburg and Leverkusen who don't have fans to make happy anyways.

Ultimately the biggest issue isn't scheduling it's the existence of the League Cup and FA Cup replays. Neither should exist and they clog the calendar up for no reason. People bang on about a winter break but all that would do is squeeze the huge number of fixtures into a smaller space.
