Connor McDavid discussion.

Is he the best player ever? Top three? I could see him on the same level as Gretzky and Lemieux.

Incredible that he's only 20 games into his career and already being compared to the greats. He has unrivalled skating and vision in comparison to anyone ever.

Are you meant to be able to follow the puck with your eyes in hockey? I tried watching a couple of times but find it hard as fuck to follow
>>
>>65648753
There used to be a glowing puck feature used during some telecasts. You can't always see the puck through all the players or the boards, but you get a feel for where it is at all times. Still, it's best watched on a large, high-def tv, but that's true for most sports.

>>65647911
I don't know about GOAT, but I do think he'd be a lot more popular if he were Canadian. He's not Gretzky, but Canadians have loved their power forward goal scorers and exuberant celebrations, then when a Russian comes along that has both those traits he gets criticized for it.

At 18 he's already an Elite player. Its likely he super-scedes Crosby as the 1st line center for Team Canada.

For what tournament and when?
>>
>>65650831
Has Crosby ever actually been Canada's first line center since juniors? He certainly wasn't in the last two Olympics.
>>
>>65651339
On paper he has but Canada typically rolled 4 lines so that's not totally fair to say he hasn't been their #1 center.

>>65651339

>>
>>65651443
NHL likely won't go 2018 and even then I doubt Babcock will trust McDavid as depth chart #1 because of his youth...though McDavid is already sound defensively and relatively mature for his age.
>>
>>65651477
They said that about 2014 and it always ends up going back to the players unwillingness to not participate.
>>
>>65651588
It made no sense to not go in 2014 aside from potential injuries and how to make money from it.

2018 I don't think anyone can legitimately be upset for not going. It really doesn't make sense.

We will see
>>
>>65651443
>He had more even strength TOI than Toews or Getzlaf so that constitutes him as the #1C
Wasn't given the best wingers, wasn't asked to shut down the other team's best line, wasn't named one of the tournament's top players in either Olympics. He was basically just a decoy.

Ovechkin has proven time and time again that he can't measure up to the great players come playoff time. The better teams can easily isolate him and take away that scoring option. This should allow Washington's other players to step up and produce more, but it hasn't been the case yet. Ovechkin ends up getting frustrated when he isn't scoring goals or putting up big offensive numbers and when that happens, he becomes a liability to his team by making risky and aggressive plays.
>>
>>65648753
It seems as if the high def broadcasts have made it even harder to follow now. I remember watching games on the CRTs when I was a kid, and the puck was always easy to follow. But maybe the game is just faster now. You have to be able to read and predict the plays though if you want to follow the puck well. The great players make it hard to do this, and it is why McDavid is so fun to watch; you never know what he is going to do with the puck.
>>
>>65652049
This is so dumb it hurts. He's a warrior in the playoffs and his numbers back it up. If anything he tries too hard to a fault.

Hardly anyone who understands hockey would ever say the lack of playoff success is his fault.
>>
>>65651396
This. The team is way to deep at center for there to be a traditional number 1. The past couple have utilized Bergeron and Toews as the D-zone centers, while Crosby and Getzlaf were used for the majority of O-zone face offs. Then they also have at least 5 other forwards who normally play center so they can switch it up quite a bit depending on the weaknesses and strengths. With a team this good, the coach can give top minutes to almost any line depending on who is hot.

>how to make money from it

The players are becoming a bunch of divas ffs.

The majority of Olympic athletes are being sponsored and need to beg for money to even be able to get the chance at competing, and then they actually have to win a medal to be rewarded for their efforts. Fucking millionaire hockey players think their too good to represent their countries on the international stage. This league is starting to really sicken me. Jewman won't be happy until the entire sport has been bled dry and replaced with a synthetic copy, devoid of all spirit and soul.
>>
No one can compare to Lemieux in my opinion. If Lemieux could have stayed healthy, there is no doubt he could have put up Gretzky's numbers, and possibly beaten them.
>>
keking at the predictable Crosby haters
>>
>>65652158
>top minute forward on his team
>team goes to playoffs almost every year
>still can't get them to the finals

He plays hard, sure. But if you watch the Oilers games, Yakupov plays hard too, but nobody talks about his warrior attributes. Both those players are similar in their ability to get frustrated when they aren't scoring goals, and then they play out of position and it ends up hurting their team. Ovechkin always shows great strides in the season to become a better team players, but it eventually falls apart in the playoffs when they meet the smart teams that understand how to frustrate Ovechkin. They added a lot more depth up front this season though, so maybe now they can step up when Ov gets shut down.

Your stupid if you think points per game in the playoffs means anything. He does well in the rounds they win, but when they lose, his stats in those rounds are terrible unless their playing a team like Philly or another similarly shitty defensive team. Then the points get out of hand as each team goes back and forth, trying to out score the other.
>>
>>65652280
>worse than the territories
Wat? You obviously have never been to the territories.
>>
>>65652311
Lemieux was probably the greatest pure athlete to play the sport, but the NHL couldn't stand to see a FRENCH Canadian dethrone their chosen one, so they injected him with cancer, made sure he sustained numerous injuries, changed the game so it was harder to score, and outright fudged his numbers. Even when it got so bad that he had to have teammates tie his skates before games, he would still comfortably dominate the entire league in all individual aspects of the game.
>>
McDavid isn't there yet, but he is on the path to becoming one of the greatest to play the game. His Offense numbers are similar to Crosby's in his first year, but he doesn't take nearly as many dumb penalties as Crosby did that year. He is showing to be more of a leader at 18 than Crosby did at that age, but Crosby had Lemieux around to shoulder that load, whereas McDavid is surrounded by a bunch of inexperienced (experienced at losing) young players. If he can stay healthy, he should without a doubt surpass Crosby, but he will never put up numbers like Lemieux or Gretzky; those days are done. If he played back then, he would probably put up their numbers, but that is a pointless discussion. Hockey is a far different sport now than it was in those days.
>>
>>65652416
This was also during the 'big forward' era of hockey. When forwards had to be 6'3" 200lb or more to be able to battle through all the hooking, grabbing, and general mayhem. Lindross was another player who dominated in this era, but if he played in todays NHL he'd find it more difficult to keep up, as would Lemieux. The opposite is true for players like McDavid, Crosby, and Kane. They'd find it difficult to play in the early and mid 90s, and would most likely have been majorly injured before they ever saw their full potential met.

Gretzky was lucky to play in the big expansion era, where he could put up huge numbers against the shit teams like Vancouver. I bet if you only took his points against the Nucks, he'd still be a ppg player.
>>
>>65652286
Fuck off faggot. It's their fucking job and they want to make money off it. They don't have to represent anyone just because some faggot Canadian gets upset over a sport

Reminder he will literally lose his spot to a 21 year old
>>
>>65652576
You seem to miss the point. Every other athlete there is doing it for the glory and prestige of competing in the sport they love for the country they are from. They have put everything they have into getting the chance, and only receive compensation if they win a medal.

NHL players already get paid absurd amounts of money to play the game they love. There is no reason they should expect to be paid for attending the Olympics, if anything, they should pay the other athletes to thank them for making it possible for an Olympics to even exist. Without the hard working athletes in the more obscure sports, the Olympics would have no point.
>>
>>65652845
McDavid would easily be on the top pp unit of an all Canadian team this season.
>>
>>65652545
>Gretzky was lucky to play in the big expansion era, where he could put up huge numbers against the shit teams like Vancouver.

Not to mention Gretzky had Messier on his line through that entire era. I mean good for Gretzky on making the best of it, but Lemieux only caught the tail end of that era and had to play with a bunch of literally whos (and still put up 199 points in a season). By the time he finally got both Jagr and Stevens on his line, the league was already well into transitioning, with injuries becoming much more susceptible to forwards.

Definitely. Have him distributing the puck down low and have someone like Benn infront to create space.

>>65652929
They were both centres. Gretzky played with Kurri & Anderson, Messier was on the 2nd line.
>>
>>65653030
Benn - Seguin - McDavid
Subban - Keith

That would be an unreal pp unit.
>>
>>65652935
Nah, it's a combination of both. The players don't go through two lockouts without discussing international competitions. They obviously didn't feel very strongly about representing their countries for free.
>>
>>65653249
>Seguin over Crosby
>Subban over Weber
>>
>>65653355
Seguin for the right hand shot.

Subban over Weber because Weber can only shoot and he is likely to injure one of his own players with his inaccurate howitzer. Subban can move the puck better, and this pp unit is all about puck movement.
>>
>>65653549
Fair enough. I see your side and agree with the Seguin bit but you have better options for a point shooter than Subban. Weber, Stamkos & Ekblad could send it

McDavid skates like no one else I've seen. It's smooth and effortless. The only thing I can think of to compare it to is a good skier. Bad skiers fight, pressing hard to turn, to stop, to control themselves. Good skiers glide, using their edges and momentum to go where they want. McDavid looks like he's skiing downhill when he's on a flat rink because he cruises so goddamn fast.

MFW this was only for Americans. That shit would have been laughed out of the country in Canada.
If you know the game, you know where the puck is going to go. It would be a hard sport for someone to pick up as an adult, I think. But the glowing streak and the different colours on those Fox (I think it was Fox) broadcasts were just atrocious.

desu the Olympics are a joke - athletes volunteering their services for no pay so major corporations can make billions.
Not to mention the local people working for no pay to put the Games on.
And then only 30%-40% of the tickets go on sale. The rest, and the best, are earmarked for corporate brass.
It's a con.
I've lived in 4 "Olympic" cities, the "legacy" is bullshit. There's nothing positive about the Olympics.

Hated Lemieux because, well, I'm a Caps fan, and I thought he was a huge bitch, but in terms of raw talent he was absolutely ridiculous.
>>
>>65652360
>Ovechkin always shows great strides in the season to become a better team players,
As a Caps fan, I can say he really doesn't. Rather, he's hardly changed since he entered the league. He's basically the same player that was 2nd in the league in +/- at his peak, and nearly dead last a few years ago, and right now. His skill's deteriorated some, but he's neither better or worse as a "team" player, which I guess means leadership and defense. The people that spout that nonsense watch a handful of games, look at his +/-, then credit the coach. ("Oates got him scoring again." "Trotz has him playing the right way.")

>He does well in the rounds they win, but when they lose, his stats in those rounds are terrible unless their playing a team like Philly or another similarly shitty defensive team.
He's struggled against the Rangers, mainly because of Lundqvist. He's also had double digit points in multiple series that the Caps lost because they had no secondary scoring whatsoever. When Toews disappeared for several series, the Hawks won the Cup. Stamkos was terrible early in the playoffs last season, but the 2nd line carried the team and Stamkos eventually got going. Crosby and Malkin took turns dominating when they won the Cup. The Kings had Justin Williams being clutch as hell. Yzerman was considered a perennial choke for the first decade of his career, all he needed was an all-star cast of teammates and the greatest NHL coach in history. Bourque needed to join the Avalanche to win a Cup. This idea that a single player that isn't a goaltender can carry their team to a Cup, or the Finals, is a joke.
>>
>>65654114
Not sure about Ekblad yet. By 2018 he may very well be that player, but he isn't there yet.

Weber could also very well slow down in two years and not be a valuable dman to have on the big ice. He already is borderline when it comes to speed and puck movement.

Stamkos shouldn't be on the team in 2018 unless he proves he can be more than a pp specialist. Seguin and Benn will have the advantage of being linemates that have chemistry, and they'd both already count as two offensive forwards, so the team should look to add more solid two way players.

Canada just has way too many right hand dmen to choose from. Subban, Weber, Doughty, Burns, Letang, Ekblad, Seabrook, and Pietrangelo. Compared to their left hand dmen: Keith....Bouwmeester...Vlasic, Phaneuf, Giordano...?
>>
>>65668128
>neither better or worse as a "team" player
I disagree. He seems to make less selfish plays now than he use too. Before, when he was knocked off the puck easily or his shot kept on getting blocked, he'd become frustrated and begin to make bad plays that cost his team. Now, while he may still make those plays from time to time, he is more likely to shrug it off and continue playing the game the way that is best for his team. The coaching staff still cater to his desire to be the number 1 go to guy, and that definitely hurts their team overall, but it also is needed to market him as an elite star, which Washington desires for marketing purposes.
