kvyat was already a red bull junior but winning the gp3 championship got him ahead of antonio felix da costa who finished formula renault 3.5 behind magnussen and vandoorne.

Hey guys first time post here, new to F1 and stuff
Tell me why do F1 cars use V6s, which are just really ordinary street car engines and not V12s or something?
>>65138720
>which are just really ordinary street car engines
This is precisely the reason. The manufacturers lobbied for the current spec engines so that they could use F1 to develop road-relevant technology.

Why do people keep saying this? There are 6 LMP-H cars in the WEC this year. Yes, the WEC is better value because there are 4 races going on at the same time but the factory LMP cars are built and balanced so they are equal over long periods of time, the actual lap times between the 3 teams are just as close as the times between Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull are in F1.

Webber:
>Those three [Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso] are on a very, very, high level. And if I had to pick one, I’d probably pick Sebastian.
>>65140926
And here I thought that would be obvious to anyone who isn't an Alonsofag. Webber himself being an Alonsofag makes it all the more notable.
>/f1/ butthurt with WEC

Wobbler is every bit as socially manipulative as Alonso. Watch the 2013 review. It pretty much destroys him as a person.

>>65141162
>Formula Mercedes, as a competition, still exists
>>65138803
>muh road relevance
Pretty sure this shit is overstated in racing. It's an activity done for glamour and marketing, "road relevance" is only a small part of it. F1 is so bloody expensive that whatever worthwhile technology takes ages to trickle down.
>>65141239
would watch, is that a Sky review?
>>65138803
There is almost no road relevancy in motorsports; specially on F1. Motorsports has always been a great marketing exercise for manufacturers, but they don't actually need to use technologies on racecars to test them; specially when motorsports aren't representative of day-to-day operations of vehicles.
>poo2loo
>>65141273
Nah, it's the official season review. It talks about all the team orders Webber has disobeyed, including the "Which switch is that, mate?" moment when multi-12 was called on him in Brazil 2012. He never mentioned a single one of those but was always quick to say whenever he felt he was being screwed over by the team (2010 front wing, which he wasn't faster with) or by Vettel (multi-21, when multi-12 had been ordered several times in 2011 and 2012 and he disobeyed every single time).
>>65141174
>>65141204
It doesn't matter if Alonso is his best m8. His reputation as a driver is measured against Vettel.
If he were to say that Vettel getting BTFO by Tricky Ricky in 2014 meant that Seb was the worst of the top 3 on the grid, he'd effectively be saying that he wasn't even good enough to match the worst of them.
Talking up the driver who matches/beats you is standard, like the Alonso-Hamilton love story, or Vettel praising Ricciardo in 2014.
>>65141404
he never stated that any of them were the worst of the three.
>>65141404
>Vettel praising Ricciardo in 2014
Except Vettel alternated his praise of Ricciardo with criticism of himself, as he quite clearly understood that he sucked that year. That's a pretty simple-minded view of the drivers you've got there.
>>65141264
>>65141325
I agree completely; however, it is the reason that was given by the major car manufacturers.
In fact, in trying to attract Audi, they would have pushed for i4 Turbos. Thankfully, the move was vetoed by Ferrari.
>>65141452
I'm not saying he did. I'm saying that you can't expect him to say anything other than what he actually did, because that would imply he was completely destroyed by someone who wasn't even the best.
>>65141465
Yes, but had he said "No, Ricciardo is not a big deal" then he'd essentially be admitting he was being beaten (for whatever reason) by someone he didn't rate. Which reflects poorly on his own driving.
The way he put it was that Ricciardo was driving very well, and Vettel, not driving at his best, was beaten. Which is a much better spin than both "I've been beaten by someone I don't rate as good" as well as "I'm only losing because I'm not driving well".
Vettel's comments about Ric, and his self-criticism, are in fact the exact phenomenon I say Wobbler is trying to exploit here
>>65141617
I don't get the impression that Webber puts himself on the same level as Hamilton/Alonso/Vettel. It seems to me that he acknowledging those three as being better than the rest.
>>65141970
He's very clear about that, I agree. However, he'd still rate himself as pretty good, so being beaten by the best (and nearly beating him to the 2010 title) would reflect better on Webber.
He's not going to admit Seb was a carbabby, because that would mean he was beaten by a carbabby. Wobbler might be realistic, but it doesn't mean he didn't have pride in his driving skill. Plus, he's still driving competitively, there would be no point damaging his stock.
>>65142076
I would rate him as one of the best drivers in the world. you don't get to his level by being meh, his performance in F1 and the WEC are solid evidence. Webber and his fans have absolutely nothing to justify. I honestly don't see Webber as having anything left to prove or protect. I doubt he gives two shits about needing to protect his legacy.

With Bottas on his way out, I expect a Massa-Nasr or Massa-Lynn lineup for 2017.
