As for why it's not up for best picture, Mad Max, The Revenant, Bridge of Spies and The Martian are all far superior. Haven't seen the others, but a brief look on Rotten Tomatoes (not the most scientific source, I know, but have to make do right now) has the rest of the movies nominated above Straight Outta Compton and Beasts of No Nation on it's list of best films of 2015.
Also need to bear in mind that the award nominations are going to be up to the subjective preference of the voters, so whilst I don't think I'd ever consider watching Room or Brooklyn, there will be people who like that type of shit (Oscar bait done correctly apparently, take note Woll Smoth) who will have nominated them
