Total footbal pleb here: Why doesn't the NFL just create a new team for LA? Why does an existing team have to move?
>>
Because the NFL is already broken up into 4 divisions per conference with four teams in each division. If they just randomly added a new team there would be one retarded division with 5 teams in it.
>>
>>64899583
During the last round of expansion, L.A. was a finalist for an expansion team but Houston got it instead. Expansion teams however are better suited to cities that haven't had a team in that sport before. Makes building the fanbase easier.
>>
>>64899583
Because the Rams belong in LA, they should've never moved.

The expansion teams in 1993 should've gone to St. Louis and Baltimore (or rather Indianapolis since the Colts should've never moved in the first place, but that's another story)

I'm all right with expanding to Carolina in 1999, but there was (and still is) no reason for Jacksonville to have an NFL team
>>
>>64899583
>Because you guys stole the Rams from LA so you're getting exactly what you deserve.
>>
>>64899583
A lot more effort and money would be required. The fixed costs of starting a new team are too high, some rich entrepreneurs who wanted to start one there would have to compete with the owners who WANT to be in L.A. because they think they'll make more money there.
>>
>>64899659
>no reason for Jacksonville to have an NFL team

Fucking this. there were so many other cities that deserved an expansion other than jacksonville.

seriously I would just love to know the reasoning behind making a team in Jacksonville of all places

There's no chance at Vegas ever getting an NFL or MLB team. The fact that the NHL is considering expanding there is retarded. Only the NBA could maybe be successful in Vegas. But from a business perspective, Vegas is a god-awful place for pro sports.
>>
>>64899768
Why? 2 million people have permanent residence there.

>>64899725
What other places are deserving of a team? Not disagreeing though
>>
>>64899814
> permanent
No. Vegas is the single most transient major metro area in the US, BY FAR. It also has relatively low income and a huge % of people working nights/weekends compared to other areas. It also has no real corporate base outside casinos.

Back in 1993, St. Louis had a stadium built, Jacksonville was ready to renovate the existing Gator Bowl, and Baltimore was ready to build as well. Oakland was basically Raiders or no one, and Nashville wasn't on anyone's radar until the Oilers moved there and the NHL gave them the Predators.

Here's how I would have done the expansions, assuming it was too late to save the LA teams:
1995: Carolina, Baltimore
1999: Nashville
2002: LA

NFL $$$$$$$

The following divisions should remain like this for the rest of eternity. If an owner wants to move, then he can fuck off:

>NFC EAST
New York Giants
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins
Dallas Cowboys

>NFC NORTH
Green Bay Packers
Chicago Bears
Minnesota Vikings
Detroit Lions

>NFC SOUTH
Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
New Orleans Saints

>NFC WEST
San Francisco 49ers
Seattle Seahawks
Arizona Cardinals
Los Angeles Rams

>AFC EAST
New York Jets
New England Patriots
Miami Dolphins
Buffalo Bills

>AFC WEST
Oakland Raiders
San Diego Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs
Denver Broncos

>AFC NORTH
Pittsburgh Steelers
Cleveland Browns (Ravens)
Baltimore Colts (Indy Colts)
Cincinnati Bengals

This is where you guys come in:
>AFC SOUTH
Houston Oilers (Titans)
Jaguars (Should they stay or move elsewhere?)
Expansion Franchise 1999 (Browns)
Expansion Franchise 2002 (Texans)

>Cities (can only pick 3)
Indianapolis
St. Louis
Nashville
Jacksonville
San Antonio
London (even though it's unrealistic fulltime IMO)

So what would /sp/ do?
>>
>>64900171
Indy, StL, Nashville

San Antonio, much like Oakland, works only if it's the Raiders

I'd also move the Bills to Toronto
>>
>>64900171
San Antonio and Indy for sure. Tossup between Nashville and St. Louis for the 3rd spot. I'd also put the Raiders back in LA with the Rams.
>>
>>64900171
San Antonio
Jacksonville
Indianapolis

>San Antonio could definitely support an NFL team
>Jacksonville has shown in the past that it can when they field a competitive team
>Indianapolis is a mainstay and has also proven it can as well

Not sure why people want to move the Jaguars so bad. They aren't even close to having the worst attendance and they contribute to the shared revenue pool more than both the Browns and the Lions, so should Detroit and Cleveland lose their teams?
>>

Biggest city in Florida. They have a shitty team that still draws a bigger crowd than the Dolphins.

I would argue that of all of Florida's teams, Jacksonville would be the last team to move. I would also argue that you're a cocksucker who knows absolute shit about football.

>L.A. was a finalist for an expansion team but Houston got it instead
How were things with 31 teams?
And why would the NFL rather give teams to Jacksonville and Carolina than Houston and LA on the previous expansion?
>>
>>64900171
Indy gets the new Browns because fuck he Irsays
San Antonio gets the Texans, can even keep the name
St. Louis get the Jags because Khan's probably moving there anyway in about 5 years

I drove down from Charlotte to Jacksonville for week 1. Was a pretty good crowd, atmosphere and stadium. They shouldn't lose their team
>>
>>64900570

Jacksonville is a massive football town because of the Gators, and was always looked at historically by owners looking to move (Irsay visited it when he wanted to move the Colts. They also had a USFL team)

North Carolina is a huge sports state. In the central part of it, you have College Basketball. Around Charlotte (Where the Panthers play), the entire NASCAR industry is set up there. Not to mention the bankers there makes it so there's no shortage of people willing to spend money on sports.

NFL insider here. Believe it or not, the most likely team to move to London in the future is the Jets.
>>
>>64900617
Just make every section of the stadium into pools and minibars, maybe then they'll actually give a fuck about going.
>>
>>64899583
sorry that no one gave you the real answer: adding a team or two means every current owner would get a smaller cut of nfl revenue. moving a team from a smaller market to l.a. means a.) each owner gets his same cut, b.) that cut will now be worth x more because l.a. is one of the biggest tv markets in the country, so the next tv deal will likely skyrocket.
>>
>>64900934
No. Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. The Texans are the expansion franchise that almost got given to LA over Houston.

He was stating that the reason the expac went to houston is because cities without teams build better fanbases. They had a team in the oilers though.

Guys.

Its literally only about which owner can wrangle the most out of cities to pay for stadiums.

Literally the only reason.

Gene "Muh diamond in the rough at d3 schools" Smith.

he was the GM for the last 6 or so years before we got Dave Caldwell. in his tenure as GM (which should be noted: he isnt a GM anywhere anymore) he drafted the same number of D2 schools AS HE DID POWER 5 SCHOOLS.

you want to know the real kicker? you know how many players are still in the league from when he was the GM? FIVE (5) PLAYERS
