Although true, they're ultimately different career paths. It's rare for NFL coaches to be former NFL players. The great majority of them played in college, but didn't have the physical assets to make in the NFL. A fair portion are former QBs, which have predominately been white. In the end, players play and coaches coach.
It's not like in hockey where the necessary skills and strategy are fairly similar across positions.
