Pelle the exception. Signed Lucas because at the time, coquelin, wilshere and flamini were all injured. saw Lucas was available for half the price, as he was listed so I went for him. His value is still at around 14m so wasn't that bad.

Honestly i think it varies with each team you're managing and what league you're in.
Just highlight your teams strengths or what some players are good at and go from there. I always prepare def positioning though and i only train players to play the role and position im asking them too.
Then it's all about micro managing, keep praising for good form, have team meetings etc.

Three possible scenarios
1) They included a ton of clauses making the ultimate value at least the same as yours if not more
2) You are a biggish rep club and they figure they can afford to ask you for more but the player has been unsettled by transfer rumours meaning they are willing to accept less from certain teams that are not yet in negotiation because they know they will lose him and won't be able to bleed other teams for bigger sums of money.
3) Other team is substantially bigger than you or a favoured club of the player so whilst the club do not feel pressured to sell to you and will ask for larger sums they know refusing him a sale to that club will upset him so they are more willing to let him go there even if it does mean he goes for a smaller sum.
Also I guess a few other things like being a rival club, being in the same league, manager liking/disliking you/the other manager, existing agreement between clubs about transfers, all sorts that weigh into it.

cm(d) works by just sitting in the midfield when you're in possession, but basically the same as a cm(s) when you don't have the ball.
considering you'll have your three up front, plus the AP and two wing backs supporting them, I wouldn't feel as though you'd need another body up front and him doing nothing in midfield would actually be more beneficial than pushing forward (by drawing defenders out and providing an easy way to cross the ball to the other side of the pitch).
On the whole, the BWM would probably be the best bet as he would press high up the pitch, but do essentially the same as a cm(d) in offense.
I wouldn't bother selling anyone for it, just use an average midfielder who can make simple passes and easy tackles as a cm(d) and he should do well.
