here's how it works: if an accomplishment that is LESS than a championship is still the height of your entire team/career success, then it matters. if you have EVER done better than that mark though, it doesn't matter anymore. this applies to both individual players and franchises as a whole.
the vikings and bills can hang banners for super bowl losses if they want to because they've never won one, or the texans can celebrate how they beat the bengals in the wild card twice because they've never won a divisional round game. andy dalton can celebrate making the playoffs 5 times, but if he ever actually wins a playoff game then the conversation becomes different and how many times you made the playoffs is of far less importance.
championship-winning players and franchises measure their success by rings and trophies. everyone who doesn't have one of those can measure their success by whatever the next best thing is they've won.
