Except Cook absolutely has the ability to increase the strike rate when required with proper cricket shots.
Compton is another story, but that's why you have two batsmen.

If they can find a Warner-type >LE AGGRESSION MEME XDXD opener to partner Cook who is actually good, then that would be perfect. Until then, they don't need to shoe-horn players like Hales and Ali into opening batsman to fulfill the meme. Having a pair of competent (if slower than average) openers is preferable to having one good opener and another who adds a quick 20-30 then loses his wicket to le aggression.

>If they can find a Warner-type >LE AGGRESSION MEME XDXD opener to partner Cook who is actually good

I'd unironically have Lyth ahead of Hales, technically he's fine, he was just hopelessly out of touch.
>>
>>64608917
>This is the only interesting series till AUS vs India.
You can't be serious.
>>
>>64608965

I agree with your disdain for the Ali and Hales experiment. But Cook plays so excellently at a slow run rate, there isn't necessarily a need for another low-scoring opener - especially with the Compton contingency plan.

Why give a man who can bat for two days with a strike rate edging over 50 - a man, additionally, whose steady presence at the crease balances his team's erratic middle order - the pressure to score quickly?
>>
>>64608988

not me
>>
>>64608977
>I'd unironically have Lyth ahead of Hales, technically he's fine, he was just hopelessly out of touch.
Yep, agree completely.
If this was 12 months ago, I would also have Carbattery ahead of someone like Hales.

I unironically thought Carberry did relatively well in the 2013/14 Ashes. A lot of his wickets were very unlucky.

>>64608988
That was just an example. In almost all situations at least 1 wicket would fall before the need to really increase the run rate presented itself. Like I said, it would be ideal if there was a meme aggression opener to partner him, who was competent, but there isn't yet.

I've been caught shilling Hales a bit (I don't think he's that great, just better than people give him credit), but I really don't feel he's a meme babby. He will forever be burdened by his status as the #3 ranked T20 status and no one will take him seriously. He's hardly pure test material but his FC average over the last two years is 50+ and his strike rate has been 60.

>>

Moving Root would be retarded. You don't put your best run scorer right at the top exposed in front of the new ball. Compton/Cook/Hale is looking like a good potential top three right now. Our middle and lower order is so destructive, all we need are some people who can stay in and see off the best of the bowling early on.

Test is a timeless classic
>>
>>64609499
To be fair, Test Cricket is evolving and changing, T20 is actually having a positive effect on it in some ways, think how stupidly action packed the last Ashes series was. It just needs to be marketed better.
>>
>>64609512
I really don't understand how people get excited about T20 or ODIs.
>>
>>64609512

see daniel, it is YOU who is not the true cricket fan

I enjoy all forms of cricket. A high quality Test series like this one is still my favourite, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the Based Bash aswell.

And the Based Bash is making the sport mainstream popular. The reality is that Test cricket and international cricket is globally on the decline.
>>
I really don't see test cricket ever dying honestly but I can see it being forced out financially. Out of actual players, most will always prefer Test cricket. All of the guys I know who play for teams try really hard to get into the two-day teams just because it's a much higher level. Look at a guy like Hales. He's one of the best at memeswinging but he's spent the last two years desperately trying to become a test batsman. Look at him now and it's fucking obvious how much he wants this. The players will always keep test cricket alive but it may get to the point in which they're the only ones that care, along with very select groups of autists like us.

>>64609524
Same. Like one in 100 ODIs are good. T20s pretty much never.
>>
Would be p chill if he just took a tangent and started talking about football lol
>>
>>64609550
I can kind of see the appeal in T20s, as you can watch the whole thing in one sitting, but it just seems so random which team wins, just meaningless action with no rhyme or reason to it. I can only really get into in when its Essex because muh county. I honestly have no idea who is in the English T20 team, I couldn't name you a single player in there. Apparently Luke Wright just did something good in Australia so maybe him?
>>
>>64609543
>see daniel, it is YOU who is not the true cricket fan
I don't give a fuck man. I'm not trying to be a be all end all cricket knowledge "true fan", I just like what I like.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the value of T20 for bringing people to the sport. It definitely has its place and will keep cricket alive, financially. Doesn't stop it from being total garbage.

I go to the local ODIs and T20s to support the players and board financially but oftentimes I just can't get behind it, try as I might. Except a little bit at the world cup, because of the raised stakes.

Compton really is fucking slow isn't he. 3 in about 30 balls. He literally gives no fucks about scoring runs and just occupies the crease. I kind of like it to be honest, it's old school. You just want Hales to actually bat like himself next to him.
>>
>>64609564
I really just hate it because I hate the tactics. I hate the whole fucking no slips and everyone on the circle shit, and the way the batsman never ever do real shots they just flat-bat everything. >If Test cricket was mainstream popular you'd hate it aswell.

That's a retarded thing to say. At least in this country, everyone looks back so fondly at 2005 and '81, when Test Cricket was THE biggest thing everyone was talking about and 100% in the national imagination.
>>
>>64609589

Had me until that last point lad. I love tests because it's by definition, limitless. You can set whatever fields, bat however you want, bowl wherever you want etc. In T20 you don't have that, and a lot of the nuances and possibilities you have in tests get lost.
>>
>>64609550
>Out of actual players, most will always prefer Test cricket.

That is demonstrably false when there is more money in t20 and it is a shitload easier.

Brendon McCullum is literally retiring early so he can get in on the t20 cash-cow.

He is literally losing millions by missing the IPL (and BBL) to play for New Zealand.

The entire state of Windies cricket disproves your nonsense

>Look at a guy like Hales.

I literally heard Hales in an interview earlier last year say t20 is his favourite format.

you are UTTERLY delusional daniel. I like Test cricket but it is completely fucked. In 10 years it will just be >us, Englel and India

You can enjoy something regardless of its flaws

T20 is exciting and all, but if you watch all forms of the game over the years you'd probably realize it's an extremely restricted form of the game marginalized for entertainment. It's the equivalent of watching football with 10 minute halves and the goals were 3 times their size, it'd be fun at first but then after years you'd get sick of it.

Nothing really against t20 besides the fact that it's sucking the life out of test, especially here in the West Indies. I grew up marveled with the strategizing and comfy nature of test cricket, then the complete shift from calm to partying from 1st day to last. ODI used to be fun to watch, but they added too many things for me to like it. Easily the least popular/liked form of the game desu.

I can get liking the party nature of t20 games, going to the oval for a 2-3 hours or just the fact that the games are close, but personally nothing beats test cricket. A proper analogy shouldn't be movies, but something like strategy games; Test is chess, 50 overs are like checkers and T20 is easily tic-tac-toe.

yeah I get that, I just ignore it

Personally the format I hate is ODI's. For me it is just a slower, convoluted version of t20.

The CWC was fucking shit. Out of literally 2 months with games every single day, there was only 2-3 good games and the entire first month was fucking pointless and predictable.

For me ODI is literally: a bit of memeing at the start, followed by just waiting for 25 overs before going into t20 mode.

> I want to see the players actually fully focused, not having shit banter with the commentators.

I dont mind that. The thing where Pietersen told the commentators what he was going to do, then Ponting explained how he would do it, and then did it was fucking great.

I am fairy certain that this spamming is the work of the newly named MMS. He has been known to be incredibly persistent in his meme spouting and regurgitating of stale ideas. That's because the WICB (and BCCI) are cancerous.

CA have got it spot on. The BBL compliments international cricket rather than competes with it like the IPL & CPL.

It's only surpassed international cricket atm because of how atrocious the West Indies are

Test cricket is declining everywhere. Sri Lanka run literally every series they play at a loss unless they are hosting AUS/IND/ENG. It's the same for basically every 'small 7' country. New Zealand LITERALLY cancelled a Test against Australia and replaced it with meme cricket.

Crowds are dropping in every single country except England.

It seems only Day/Night memes will save Test cricket here

He really isn't. His back has been fucked and steadily deteriorating for years, because he cannot stop taking painkillers and diving into advertising boards. Even if you look at his batting stance now compared to 18 months ago it's more lopsided.

Like I said, mentally he's shot. He's done in tests and his batting is becoming a liability. >We don't have anyone better but I'd still rather replace him with someone who has age on his side and a desire to bat for ages, rather than meme 75 off 50 balls. As a captain he's done his job and it's time to move on.

It's really pathetic and serves no purpose at all besides curing his boredom.

TV bombshell Tara Rushton could deliver the Australian Kangaroos Test No. 7 to the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Cooper Cronk is considering quitting the final year of his contract with the Melbourne Storm in a $1.1 million sacrifice to be with Sydney-based Fox Sports stunner Tara Rushton — and the Dragons are ready to pounce.

Cronk is likely to snub a $1.1m contract option with Storm in 2017 so he can move closer to Rushton — and the Queensland No. 7 is already deep in discussions with the Dragons in a move that would see him finish his career at Kogarah.

Rushton — first linked to Cronk in June — is firmly planted in Sydney and the pair is keen to get serious after a six-month long-distance relationship. A regular in Melbourne to cover A-League matches, the Fox Sports host confirmed her relationship with Cronk after the pair happily posed for photos at the AFL grand final in September.

Cronk is contracted to Storm until the end of 2017 but is already negotiating to leave Melbourne at the end of the year with the playmaker telling Storm officials he is likely to not take up the option for 2017, which is in his favour.

>>

Okay lets forget Brendon McCullum, it really doesnt matter, he is just one example.

I'll give you another.

Chris Lynn is one of the most talented batsman in Australia. He has a good FC record. He LITERALLY skipped the Australia A First Class tour of India to play the CPL.

How does that not disprove everything you've been saying?

And Australia is one of the two (Englel being the other) cunts where Test players still earn more than t20 cricketers.

if its happening here, everyone else is fucked.

I don't disagree with your main point, just being pedantic on McCullum.

>>
>>64609788

I agree, but it wont happen

They just sharply decreased the amount of gibs that the 'small 7' get. it isn't going to swing back the other way.

Only India could decide to do that (because its basically their money) and they simply wont.

As recently as last year India threatened to Kerry Packer international cricket and create a mega year round IPL

I did and that's exactly what I'm talking about. Test cricket simply can't compete with that when Jason Holder is earning $15,000 for three Test matches when he could be earning $100k for walloping in t20 in the same time period.

Multiply that by a factor of 10 in the IPL.

>Cricket is fucked - T20 is its Frankensteins monster.

Test and t20 can and should be able to coexist. The problem is that the BCCI in particular is motivated by the short-term bottom line.

T20 is simply more profitable at the moment so thats what they want to put all their eggs in. But Test cricket is the format that will endure and still be relevant in 100 years. But they don't care about that.
