With the CFP ratings down and ESPN obviously hurting, the bids for programming are obviously going to be lower at some point.

Wondering what will happen when the NFL,NBA,MLB,NHL etc. have to lower the salary cap. It's going to damage people's perception of the leagues and I'm positive there will be labor strife.

Think this is coming in 5-10 years? What will the fallout be for sports long term?

Yes. It's not down to ratings, it's down to cord- cutting. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

You don't think it has something to do with them moving the cfp semifinal games to new years eve, and a bunch of midwestern-who-gives-a-fuck football schools making up half of the top 25, do you?
>>
>>64606386
As opposed to what past scenario?

(I'm genuinely curious)

MLB doesn't have salary caps. E$PN sucking and amateur football being boring has no affect on pros. if anything it'll be great because someone else could get MNF because disney has no place covering any games. People cutting tv services doesn't mean jack shit to the NFL because all you need is rabbit ears to be able to watch the games.

This

>scheduling games on a day when half the market will almost certainly go out and do something else

Even putting the games on Christmas makes more sense
>>
>>64606410
In all fairness ESPN pretty much runs autonomously. DIS just puts name on paper as the parent company.
>>
>>64606386
They had no choice in the matter
They wanted them off New Year's Eve, but the CFP wouldn't let them

Move the semifinal back to new years day when no one has social obligations all night long.

Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl were both on New Years Day, 2015.
Also, Alabama vs Ohio State and Oregon vs FSU was a hell of a lot sexier then Alabama vs Michigans-2nd-best-and-flukier team and Clemson vs Oklahoma. Who roots for oklahoma outside of oklahoma? I cannot name a single player on their team.

At one point the projected top four was stanford, notre dame, alabama and ohio state. That would have been a much more compelling matchup, and still would have been I think.

Money will not stop flowing into major league baseball for the next decade plus.

People are able to skip ads on TV by recording, and on the internet via streaming and adblock. Viewers, for whatever reason, are willing to watch sports events live and suffer through the endless viagra and piss-tasting beer commercials. Thus TV deals will continue to increase in value as they are the last bastion for advertisements.

Additionally, the revenue structure for MLB is different then the other leagues. The NFL currently has all of their games broadcasted by interchanging national providers, (EG CBS, MNF etc) but the revenue from each week is divided equally among the teams. The Dallas Cowboys, overvalued by forbes, makes the exact fucking same as the cleveland browns in tv revenue.

MLB teams are able to bargain with local television stations for contracts worth billions of dollars that go directly into owners pockets. From an actual dollars standpoint, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland Athletics are worth more far than the Dallas Cowboys or any premier football franchise ever could be. (Rays next deal is projected to make them 80-100 million a year alone)

It won't happen
The Rose Bowl has too much power
>>
>>64606757
it's not really that. it's just that the semifinals rotate venues. last year it was rose/sugar, this year it's orange/cotton, next year it's fiesta/peach
>>
>>64606876
Actually it is
The Rose and Sugar are locked on NYD for the next 12 years
>>
>>64606713
No, cord-cutting will hurt the MLB too. Just look at the Cubs or Astros fiasco, companies won't want to repeat that shit and lose a fuckton of money.
>>
>>64606962
Fuck, meant the Dodgers, not the Cubs.

nigga what the fuck are you talking about
>>
>>64607003
fuck the dodgers, TWC had not business getting that deal and now expect their customers to pay for it
>>
that's what you get for snubbing Ohio State for a couple of memesters you fags
>>
>>64607011
Not that dipshit but Dallas is worth $1.85 billion. Where are you getting the $4 billion valuation from?
>>
Worth noting that 1/1/17 is a Sunday, so they'll likely delay the CFP to Monday, and I believe the Rose Bowl is a CFP game again next year mostly resolving that issue. So the issue of when to air the CFP won't come up again until 2019.

>>64607097
The thing is, you can kind of see TWC's logic on signing the deal given past precedent, they just finally proved there's a breaking point on what people will pay. I think it's going to limit the scale of some new long-term deals, especially with cablers fearing cord-cutting squeezing revenue.

>I believe the Rose Bowl is a CFP game again next year
FUCK, I meant "the next year" (i.e. 2018).

please god stop this notre dame meme

they are bad and lost all their important games this year; they got to the Fiesta bowl based on losing to good teams
>>
CFP ratings are down because it was inexplicably on new year's eve and both games were blowouts
