Stupid ball
Stupid uniforms
Stupid team names
Stupid player names
Stupid replacement for the coin toss
Stupid announcers

Basically like a 13 year old wrestling fan said "what if I took everything about the WWE and applied it to the NFL!"

Only instead of a 13 year old it was Vince McMahon.

If it was literally just standard fucking football in the off season, it could have been the band-aid for our summer woes. But instead they had to make it as juvenile and stupid as humanly possible.
>>
Just look at the fucking logo
>>
because the players sucked
because mandrama narratives
because injuries
>>
Turns out you can overestimate the stupidity of the American public
>>

no real talent, it was basically an amateur league with a couple of gimmicks
>>

Adding retarded WWE soap opera shit to the locker room.

Trying too hard to be edgy and different from the NFL
>>
>>64596489
to decide who gets the ball to start they would put the ball at the 50 yard line and have a guy from each team sprint and whoever ended up with it got to pick

both players separated their shoulders on the first play of the season
>>
It wasn't a fail. Football fans failed the XFL.
>>
>>64596489
instead of a coin toss, they basically played the beginning of dodgeball where everyone rushes to grab the ball from the center. one of the players got a season ending injury on the first play of the first game because of this
>>
>>64596489
XFL games had no coin toss. Teams had two players scramble catch a ball in the middle of the field and whoever won got to chose to defer or receive. The first injury in the league occurred during this play. Some fag ended up dislocating his shoulder and missed the entire season.

Playing in the spring while aiming too high. Unless they started out with high contracts that would lure players away from the NFL fringe, anyone who thought they had a chance of playing big time fall ball wouldn't bother showing in the spring. I don't have any interest in NFL but I was all over mandrama when this started, and yet this is the first time I have heard of it, strange.
>>
The real answer is the NFL took out the xfl because it had a little bit of steam behind it. This wasn't one of these shitty pro-am leagues or arena league football. As you can see in the comments...people actually watched the XFL and remember details about it. Good or bad it had viewership. To this day people still remember "He Hate Me". Arena Football was way to gimmicky to be watchable. XFL had some gimmicks but it was still close enough to regular football that it was seen as a threat to the Shield.
>>
>>64596714

>>
>>64596714
A lot more people remember watching it than actually watching it. May have just tuned in for a game. Ratings were pretty shoddy, and so was actual attendance.

still. The nfl didn't want it getting steam. The XFL was on a large enough tv platform that it was a memorable blip on the radar. I'm not saying the XFL was decent ratings, just there was enough there to raise eyebrows. And Vince has proven that he can grow a business. Vince McMahon was trying to save football. America let him down, and more importantly, themselves down.

>XFL talks about the passion the players have for the game of football, implying they hardly care about the money

>Championship game is marketed as a million dollar game where the winning team gets a million dollars

It was a failure because it was gimmicky and trashy more than anything. Like that entire trash TV era of Jerry Springer, WWF, etc was basically dead by 2001.

I think the attendance and general buzz about it showed there was a market for another football league at the time but the XFL basically made it such a shitshow that any league trying now is immediately put in it's same shit shadow.

It ended up being the CFL halo rule. It felt like there were halo violation flags every third punt.

It was *really* fucking stupid.

The coverage was basically attitude-era stupid. They tried to make it what Vince considered "sexy". And the D had a big advantage on the offense.

NBC wanted out quick. But IIRC, live attendance did pretty well all season.

>>
>>64605857
No one's figured out how to yet. Big money people either invest in the NFL, or are boosters to their colleges. The UFL was close, but they scared off legitimate investors because the ownership group wanted a bigger slice of the pie when the NFL threatened to lock out and drive players to their league. FXFL is pretty much dead on arrival, New USFL is never arriving at all. Takes a LOT of money to start up a new league. Patience, too.

>>
>>64605857
You can create your own separate league, but the problem is the NFL is way too powerful to take on directly. This leads to new football leagues having their season during the spring, when there isn't any NFL or NCAAF. The biggest problems are attracting decent players to the new league, getting TV deals with relevant networks and essentially creating a new market in each city you put a team. You need a lot of fucking money to get this done, and people simply put aren't willing to invest in something that is most likely going to bust.

They started getting some momentum in the second season, had money coming in, had owners coming in, had the NFL's respect.

NFL has a lockout looming. Not sure if they're going to play, players start talking about the UFL. UFL brass gets the idea that they might be the only show in town, and tries to screw with the new owners and investors by getting greedy with the potential windfall. Scares off Joe Theismann, scares off Jim Speros (CFL owner), scares off Red McCombs (rich Texan), scares off some other owner in Portland, scares off Joe Moglia (coach/billionaire). NFL didn't lockout, league never recovered.

This. The only exception is the AFL which went head-to-head because it was run by a bunch of rich kids pissed off about getting rejected by the NFL. The deep grudge they all held gave the AFL all the time & money it needed, plus it was buoyed by marketing innovations and wild pass-oriented offenses that ran up the score.

Eventually the owners got their wish when the leagues merged. Supposedly the deal got done behind Al Davis's back because he wanted to kill the NFL off & replace it all together. Don't mess with billionaires, man.
