Move the games to New Years Eve they said.
>>
what sport is this
>>
It's surprising they even got that much, considering how boring both games were
>>
>>64593344
Why do you care? It's not like you were doing anything
>>
>>64593372
advertisement ball
>>
Both games were incredibly boring blowouts
>>
Honestly a pretty big blow to espn. They're paying billions for the playoff rights. It is their biggest event of the year and a huge money maker for a network that's already in the red. 16% drop in ratings is massive.
>>
>>64593472
Their biggest event is the NBA finals
>>
>>64593501
>espn
>finals
>>
>>64593472
They shouldn't be played on New Years Eve. Play them on New Years Day because no one is doing shit on New Years Day.
>>
>>64593344
fuck, how long must we wait until this shit (espn) gets taken off air?
>>
>>64593344
>implying this meme sport isn't dying
>>
>>64593501

The biggest ESPN event. Finals are on ABC. Same parent company obviously, but ESPN is the sinking ship in the Disney stables.
>>
>>64593472
Good. ESPN has not sustained viability in a market where other major broadcasters have their own dedicated sports outlets, and their original programming has been very hit-and-miss. I am happy that they're quickly dying off, that they have the balls to charge more per month than fucking HBO means their demise can't come soon enough
>>
>>64593344
>New Years Eve
>Both boring as fuck

Surprised it got that much tbqh
>>
The problem is that tOSU wasn't playing.
>>
>>64593522

Espn knew this and did everything they could to keep games on new years. Committee made the move iirc
>>
ESPN basically got told to put them on NYE because the committee/commissioners of the conferences wanted to start a tradition of playoff bowl games on NYE for whatever god awful reason.
>>
>>64593501

Do those actually get better ratings than the college football championship? I mean those are on ABC anyway so it's different from ESPN playoff games
>>
>>64593384
>>64593560
You play to win the game
>>
>>64593344
How about having the game when every fucking store is closed on the 1st. Is ESPN really this dumb?
>>
>>64593576
That's so fucking stupid.

Doing that means you're going to be competing with fucking 4 channels, including you sister station ABC.
>>
>>64593602

Muh Rose Bowl
Muh 114 years
>>
NYD should always be Rose + the semifinal games (if the Rose isn't one of them)

NYE should always be Peach + two non-semifinal bowls
>>
>>64593576
They were told off by the Rose Bowl
>>
>not extending the playoffs to 5 and giving OSU a bye every year
Smh. No wonder they lost so many viewers. I turned both games off by half time
>>
>>64593586

If it's like a Lakers/Boston Game 7 of the Finals maybe, but other than that no prolly not. Finals get 12+ regularly if a good matchup but not usually 15+.
>>
>>64593634
And the Sugar Bowl rode those old white coattails.
>>
>>64593634

Yeah it's mainly the Rose Bowl, but I think I read the Sugar Bowl wants NYD too
>>
Throughout the College Football broadcast, they kept constantly reminding you that on ABC, at the same time as the Playoff games, the Dick Clark New Years Special was on ABC.

So clearly ESPN is fucking stupid.
>>
>>64593630
Or have 2 games starting at 11am, 2 at 2pm, and the semis at 5:30 and 9
Maybe give other networks the non-semis games

Rose Bowl gave them the power though
They had NYD even in the BCS
>>
>>64593634
>>64593693
>>64593710
Why couldn't they just out them all on new years day and move the irrelevant bowls to nye or the 2nd like they had done every other fucking year
>>
>>64593757
Shit like that is why they are failing.
>>
>>64593782
No clue
>>
>>64593731
Rose is the only bowl with that sort of pull (IIRC they're still on ABC while the other NY6 bowls are on ESPN)

the NY6 bowls want their game running unopposed (except against a minor bowl or something); I like the 3 on NYE/3 on NYD setup but the playoff games should never be on NYE; rotate which games are on NYD
>>
>>64593782
Because logic does not exist within the NCAA
>>
>>64593782
I try to not waste my time thinking what goes through old white people's mind sometimes.
>>
>>64593847
The NYE games shouldn't be played at 8pm either
>>
>>64593847
I don't
No need for a game when most of the country is working
The Peach Bowl is getting killed playing at noon on a workday
>>
>>64593344
They didn't really have a choice. Rose and Sugar bowls wouldn't move.

>>

>>
How many years until ESPN is completely defunct?
>>
>>64593959
I don't think you have to worry about that; ESPN always gets the worst possible playoff game (I'm going to guess they get whatever game Houston is in)
>>
>>64594007
Never. They got the power of Disney/Star Wars keeping them alive.
>>
>>64593942
The ncaa created this mess, I feel no sorrow for them
>>
>>64593344
They said they were looking to keep at least 70% of the ratings of the New Year's Day bowls.
Orange is 62.5% and Cotton was 64.7% of last year in the same timeslot. ESPN will look at this as a failure, but not a disaster.

College Football Playoff head Bill Hancock said they would "change the paradigm" of how America celebrates New Year's Eve.
>>
>>64594391
Yeah that's what I am saying... it didn't need to be this way, but they had to make it more complicated
>>
>espn losing ratings on nye bowl games is the end of them

lol no. These niggas already got your money from cable subscription fees.
>>
>>64594812
Yeah that's why they're firing people by the hundreds and shareholders are in a panic over billions in lost subscription money
>>
>>64594498
The NCAA has never had control of this
>>
>>64594812
They are pretty close to 2005 levels of subscribers. They'll soon be holding 2018 contracts with 2000 subscriber numbers.
>>
I watched both games last year but didn't watch either one last night. It's NYE for fuck sake. Who thought this was a good idea?
>>
>>64594812
More and more people are cutting cable/satellite. ESPN shut down grantland and are firing people every month, they're spiraling downwards
>>
>>64593344
yeah it seemed like a bad idea
>>
>>64594900
Of course they did. They have total control over the sanctioning of their sports. They made the choice to create the cfp system instead of doing it on their own
>>
>>64593586
They around 12 to 20n
>>
>>64594077
That movie was really good though. Didn't make a lot of money because people are morons.
>>
how the fuck can anyone justify subscribing to cable/sat at this point anyways

even if you don't care about the money you'd still be better off paying your hooker to do something a little extra nasty rather than subscribing
>>
>>64594999
No one would willing given up power
The bowl system has been around since for nearly a hundred years
The NCAA couldn't overcome it
>>
>>64595142
For me, the price of standalone internet versus the cable+Internet package are about the same so it is not a big deal.
>>
>>64595295
Ding ding. Plus it's not worth the hassle of figuring the shit out
>>
>>64593472

15.5 to 9.7 is a lot more than 16% down desu senpai.
>>
>>64594812
>what is cordcutting
people are getting rid of cable. they only get paid for every subscriber to their channel. cable companies cant pay espn for subcribers that dont exist.
>>
>>64594812
Nigga, this is the era of streaming. Cable and Satellite subscriptions are diving and both are struggling to compete. Why do you think so many cable channels are creating stream services now?
>>
This is more because last year was the first ever college football playoffs. The move to New Years Eve didn't help but the drop in ratings would have happened regardless
>>
This is what the chairman of the playoff said
>“Sure, we're aware of that, but we just decided that people will watch these games,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock said. “This playoff would be successful if it was played on the Fourth of July. People watch the NCAA Tournament on Thursday and Friday. This is an iconic national sporting event and people will watch it.”
About ESPN's proposal to move the games to Saturday
>“At first blush, it made a lot of sense,” Hancock said. “But we had announced that we're going to start a new paradigm of back-to-back tripleheaders on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. It just didn't feel right for us to delay the start of the new tradition by one year.”
But for the Rose Bowl
>“The 100-year tradition of the Rose Bowl is something that's important to college football,” Hancock said. “People sitting in their homes in Kansas City in the snow watching sun-drenched California on New Year's Day is a great national tradition, and if we didn't have to mess with it, we didn't want to mess with it.”
And
>Hancock said, "but we're not slaves to ratings.”
>>
I don't know why NCAA insisted on forcing some sort of tradition with the playoffs being on NYE..

Apparently ESPN tried talking them out of it.

Also, the games weren't blowouts til the 2nd half. Bama was up 10 and Clemson was down 1 going into the half. The Clemson Oklahoma game was a 2 possession game going into the 4th quarter, too.

do these southern hicks who run the NCAA not realize that people work (an unknown concept to southern white trash and niggers) and drink and get laid on NYE? also college ball is not popular enough up in the northeast for people to stop their normal nye celebrations. would you rather get laid by some qt3.14 on nye or watch some groids chase each other for a pigskin?

>>
>>64596136
People like primetime games, but ESPN MNF gets the barebones of picks every week for their games (Broncos/Bengals is like the only good matchup they've had all year). NBC always gets first pick for Sunday night, they always throw a division game on Thursday, and then Fox always gets a marquee matchup at 4:25p (CBS usually does too). That leaves very few "homerun" matchups that ESPN can latch to every week. A lot of this is hurt because teams like Dallas and the Giants (big markets) were down this year.
>>

Last year was amazing,

memiota vs winston (#1 pick vs #2 pick)
osu vs bama (2 biggest powerhouse programs in the country)

This year was
undeserving msu vs bama (obviously msu would get btfo and no one gives a fuck about their shitty aids infested school)
and clemson vs oklahoma (acc schools should be baned from the playoffs)
>>
>>64596258
I think in terms of how the league prioritizes, it goes

1. Sunday night
2. Sunday evening
3. Monday Night
4. Sunday afternoon
5. Thursday Night

Espn got screwed over by crappy games. They create these crappy schedules a few months before the season starts and they refuse to budge even a little if a team sucks balls in the current season.
