That's not why they've lost their status though. And that's the key word - status. They don't have it. Nebraska no longer means what Michigan or Alabama or USC means. People knew Michigan will be good again, just as they knew Alabama would be and just as they know USC will be. This isn't true for Nebraska; the people who expect them ever to win a natty again are a distinct minority.
Their recruiting classes for the past decade or more are seldom higher than #30-#40 and never more than #20. They don't get top level coaches. They simply don't have the status that comes with being a blooblod.

Wake has to compete with NCSU (2 legit championships), Duke (4 legit championships), and UNC-CHeat (5* championships, 2-3 illegit) just in state, so their basketball is very flukey to have a great season. they tried shifting to football with disastrous results, though they have the most recent ACC Championship of those 4 schools. UNC has tried cheating their way to the top and has seen results n basketball, but football is still a joke. NCSU and Duke are mediocre at football and don't put much effort into it, but generally can get to bowls (NCSU moreso than Duke)
