What's it like to be from such an irrelevant country?
>>
>>64561432
He's the oldest player in the top ten by more than five years, and still one of the very best. His performances in Shamkir and Stavanger this year were excellent by any standard. It wouldn't be out of place to see a third match for the World Championship between Carlsen and Anand.
>>64561498
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is one of the most interesting players in the world elite.

Giri is perhaps the most dangerous player who might qualify for the World Championship match this year.

There were two notable events in December: the London Chess Classic and the Qatar Masters Open.
The London Chess Classic was a ten-player tournament in which everyone plays everyone once, and fielded Carlsen, Giri, Aronian, Nakamura, Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave, Anand, Topalov, Grischuk and local hope Adams.
The Qatar Masters Open had more than a hundred participants, among them Carlsen, Kramnik, Giri and So.
Carlsen won both events, but had to play a playoff both times (against Vachier-Lagrave and Yu Yangyi, respectively).
>>64561956
He went through the Grand Chess Tour unbeaten and is not only the youngest player on the list, but also the only one with a plus score against Carlsen.

Here is the full list of players.
>>
Norway bro could you give us a tl;dr version of the current top 10 players (or at least the important ones) and how they might fuck up Carlsen?
>>
>>64562241
In order of live rating:
Kramnik: master of positional play and the man who dethroned Kasparov by the turn of the millennium. Is old and not quite as good as he used to be, but terrifying when he is in form. Not qualified for Candidates, in spite of his position on the rating list.
Giri: The youngest player on the list has never lost to Carlsen, and apart from a quick win when Giri was 16, they have drawn all their games since. Extremely solid. Qualified for Candidates by average rating in 2015.
Aronian: Very creative, universal style. Has outplayed Carlsen more times than anyone else, according to Carlsen himself, but has a tendency to be unable to finish him off. Beat Carlsen in their last encounter. Qualified for Candidates by wild card.
Nakamura: Never beats Carlsen. Qualified for Candidates.
Caruana: One of the few people who beats Carlsen with any semblance of regularity. Has several nice wins, but a negative overall record. A WC match between these two players would be very exciting. Qualified for Candidates.

More to come.
>>
>>64562349
MVL: Extremely strong tactician and calculator. Shows good form. Not qualified for Candidates, which is a shame.
Anand: Living legend. Performances vary between slightly disappointing and truly stellar. If he has a good tournament, he might very well challenge Carlsen in a match. Qualified for Candidates as former finalist.
Topalov: Highly unpredictable. Perhaps the best attacking player in the world, though not quite as good in defense. Had a terrible tournament in London (+0-4=5). Has beaten Carlsen twice this year, though the first one was on time in a dead lost position. Qualified for Candidates by average rating through 2015.
So: Very solid. Only played against Carlsen four times (one loss, three draws). Not qualified for Candidates.

Also qualified for Candidates are Sergey Karjakin and Peter Svidler. I consider them outsiders in a tournament where all other players are favourites, and should they win, a match against Carlsen would be very tough.
>>
>>64562349
>>64562471
Cool information thanks. So who is most likely to give Carlsen a hard time in your opinion?
>>
>>64562471
The two other players I think deserve mention are Alexander Grischuk and Ding Liren.

Grischuk started the year above 2800, but has dropped down to around 2750. He's strong in all phases of the game, but has an unfortunate tendency of getting very low on the clock. He lost against Carlsen in the final round of the London Chess Classic, in a game which could have gone both ways.
Ding Liren is the best among the upcoming Chinese players, and younger than Carlsen. He was in the top ten for some time this year, but fell out of the list just this month.
>>64562518
Giri. He's the youngest, he's the only player with an undefeated plus score against Carlsen, and he's the highest rated player qualified for the Candidates Tournament (assuming live ratings, not official ones).
>>
Is there any russian prospect?
>>
>>64562880
Vladislav Artemiev is one to look out for. He's the third youngest player in the top 100.

there's no secret. chess is mostly just for people who are autistic and being a chess master is not reflective of your intelligence although smart people tend to play chess. ask yourself why these chess "geniuses" never go on to accomplish anything of note with that genius. it's because they play a fucking board game.

How big is the gap between a master and a grandmaster?
>>
>>64562935
Do you think he can reach top ten?
>>
>>64563131
>all them huehues ITT

You looking for new fields to be relevant in?
>>
>>64563113
Define "master". FIDE has several titles. Candidate Master (CM) must have achieved a rating above 2200, FIDE Master (FM) above 2300, International Master (IM) above 2400 and Grandmaster (GM) above 2500. In addition, there are other requirements called "norms", certain tournament performances that are required for the titles.
>>64563131
It is possible, but difficult.
>>
I know I'm not allowed to post, but I'm really excited to see Giri play in the Candidates Tournament.
I can't think of a single game of his that I didn't enjoy. Probably the most interesting player in the last 10 years.
>>
>>64563111
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Spanish_chess_players for a small list

>>64563076
But that's still beside the point, you might expect Spaniards to excell at football or handball, but maybe I'm just really wrong here
>>
>>64563015
>>64563341
Spain and the Latin American countries are actually not that good at chess. Only Cuba has a player in the world elite and a good team. Spain and Peru also have a strong first board player as well as promising, young players to fill in the rest of the team, but that is more or less it.
>>
>>64563469
Then I was mistaken in my belief, got it.

Also, in your opinion, what "countries" are indeed surprisingly good at chess?
>>
>child's game played by autists

pass.
>>
>>64563549
Armenia springs to mind. They have a population of only three millions, and is the most-winning Chess Olympiad nation after 2000 (Armenia has won 3, Russia 2, Ukraine 2 and China 1).
>>
>caring about a game where a program running off a cell phone can easily curbstomp the top human
Go is the superior game.
>>
>>64563549
I don't know if it's surprising, but USA and Russia are pretty damn good. Norway has Carlsen, which is incredible from such a small country.
Ukraine is really, really strong.
France, Armenia and Hungary are all pretty good too.
>>
>>64563264
I'm a regular here, m8. Comfiest thread on /sp/. Shame i don't know much about chess, but norgebro is always patient and helpfull.

>>64563269
I didn't know there were multiple tiers of master. I was talking about skill gap, though. Could a player rated 2500 beat a 2700 without it being a fluke?
>>
>>64563587
So you would rather watch a car race because they will be always faster than humans?

Stupid argument.
>>
>>64563611
It happens, but it is also depending on what you would call a fluke. For instance, Yannick Pelletier (2571) of Switzerland has beaten both Nakamura and Carlsen this autumn. Are these two games flukes, or just somewhat unlikely results that still happened?
>>
>>64563577
Interesting. I wonder what makes Armenia in particular excel, but maybe this is just a short-lived golden phase.

>>64563591
USA and Russia being top tier is not surprising at all. Neither is Norway having an elite player though Armenia, Ukraine and Hungary do come as surprises
>>
>>64561555
>Not a single Anglo in this entire list

>>
>>64563653
why dont they make 2 supercomputers play eachother?

wouldnt that yield the perfect game of chess?
>>

See for yourselves. There are several decisive games.
http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2015-tcec-s8f
>>
>>64563812
The fact that some positions can be calculated to reach an endgame in Weakly polynomial time doesn't mean that all, or even most can.

Chess is very much impossible to solve even with all the rules to draw the game, it is at least PSPACE-hard
>>
>>64563812
For those unwilling to look through all the games, Komodo beat Stockfish 9-2, with 89 draws. Interestingly, 5 of the 11 decisive games were won with the black pieces.

Should I feel bad for favoring Svidler as an American? I also really don't care for Nakamura as he tends to be a crybaby among other things.
>>64561565
Honestly with Carlsen being as good as he is that counts for at least 3.

Also kek at Topalov's rating after his disaster in London.
>>
>>64564893
No, Svidler is not only the underdog in the upcoming Candidates, but also a really nice guy. I met him at the 2013 World Cup, we looked at one of his games from the tiebreak against Ushenina.
