Alright so I finally understand this whole fiasco with the coin flip. Here is what happens.
Game goes to OT. Bellichick decides he wants to kick with the wind and informs the referee of this choice on the sideline before the coin flip. Bellichick tells Slater to kick the ball if they win the toss, because if New York wins they will obviously elect to receive.
Coin flip. Slater calls heads. It's heads. Referee remembers what Bellichick said and asks/suggests to Slater 'do you want to kick'. Slater says 'we want to kickoff that way' (pointing with the wind). Slater looks perfectly composed at this point, nothing is wrong.
Referee then fucks up and turns to the Jets player asking which way they want to receive, (possibly enticed by the visible confusion of the Jets players); but according to the rulebook, when a team elects to kick they also get to choose which goal to defend. When the Jets player selects the goal with the wind, Slater is visibly bewildered, and asks 'wait, don't we get to choose' meaning choose which goal to defend. The referee then covers his mistake by redirecting the question and making it seem like the confusion surrounds whether the Patriots want to actually kick or receive.
Basically the ref had a brain fart (which is common enough these days) and then refused to backtrack. You'll probably see a statement from Dan Blandino at some point to this effect.
