This is probably going to come across as a demeaning question but I am legitimately curious as to why Scotland isn't dominant at this sport considering they invented it. The US has by far the most players in the top 100. Is it just not popular there anymore? Or is there some sort of bias in the rankings (I don't really even know - is the PGA considered the most elite tour?)?
Scotland's too small to maintain a strong playing base, playing Golf there is more common amongst normal people than in a lot of places but it's not on a level as say Uruguay and football.
America's got the upper hand as it's full of rich people and Golf courses.
Scotland used to be entirely dominant but it's unsustainable.

The us could easily have the most top 100 players in every sport. It's just a matter of popularity and exposure.
Like other people have said, it's a matter of population. A small country will find it impossible to totally dominate a sport that is popular worldwide.
They still produce a respectable number of good players.
