I think it was Cruyff who said that LVG's greatest strength is his organizational skills, he's great at laying down structures and systems but he's very rigid and doesn't have much flexibility. He has his "philosophy" and he tries to get the players to play in that way, if it isn't working out, he's somewhat limited in trying to change things.
Heynckes' Bayern did build on the LVG foundations but they were a lot more attack-minded, Heynckes wanted more goals. They played more freely than under Van Gaal but there was still that underlying structure in place.
When Pep came on, he started to evolve the style of the previous 2 even more. It is still possession football and perhaps the biggest change he's made is how flexible the players are on the field and how they can shift positions and the shape as they're playing. It's not quite total football of course, but the idea is similar. This is why I think it would make sense for Manure to get Poop, he could build on top of the ground work LVG has done, and the attacking would be more creative and daring under Guardiola. Pep is likely going to City though.

Football managers get called much worse things by thousands of people every weekend, that's the job
I bet that if Shaw didn't get that horrible injury and Rooney wouldn't drop so much in form, United would have looked way better in attack. Shaw's runs were devastating and Rooney used to be way more dangerous to the opponents instead of to himself.
