anyone can kick a ball around, regardless of wealth or climate. Therefore more people kick that ball around and take an interest in other people kicking the ball around. But like most globalist things its actually shit.
Hockey is another "rich" sport, it can never have global appeal. But at least other "rich" countries are getting in on it now, Australia has their own leagues etc.
Baseball does have more global appeal than people acknowledge especially in Latin America and Asia but its a bit too boring/slow for rowdy young drunks to get into it and people are afraid to give Africans bats.
