You think Monaco is better for racing than Hungary? You can overtake without DRS at Hungary.
>>
>>64292745
there's one corner on the whole track that is conducive to overtaking. it's called monaco without walls for a reason. there has never been a good race there that wasn't down to crashes left right and centre, and every other race is decided by tyre wear with zero on track battling.

meanwhile monaco has much more battles for position and because it is so punishing if you make a mistake the quality of the racing is far higher even though overtakes are hard to come by
>>
>>64292501

I'm giving FE 4 more years before I can judge it or not. The potential is there, but the teams and manufacturers are fighting the limits of the technology behind electric cars, which is why they're so slow compared to just about any gasoline-powered single-seater.

On the other hand, in 4 years the rulebook for Formula E is supposed to be wide-fucking-open and I want to see what that would look like...

>>
>>64292997

>>
>>64293121
catalunya isn't as bad as hungary. it meets fia track width regulations instead of being 8 metres fucking wide, has elevation change, has more than one straight and doesn't have the same corner 4 times in a row. the chicane ruined the track but it's nowhere near as awful a track.

>Can you explain why Hungary 2015 was not good racing?
a race whose only battles for position result in contact and forcing a driver 5 car widths off the track is not good racing wise. spectacle wise? yeah, it was pretty good by that metric alone because nobody saw mclaren finishing ahead of ever mercedes powered car, the mercs not finishing in the top 5, vettel winning a second race and red bull getting a double podium. but as far as the battling was concerned it was only better than the races like australia, china, canada and japan where literally NOTHING happened. the hungaroring just doesn't encourage good racing and f1 has outgrown it as a venue.

Take a look back to Bahrain 2014. It had constant wheel-to-wheel racing and cars going side by side pretty much every lap. Even this year's race had a good amount. Cars can do this at Bahrain because the circuit isn't as narrow as a go-kart track and you don't have to be 2 seconds faster than the car ahead to stick your front wheel alongside by the time the next corner comes along.

Hungary on the other hand is impossible for cars to go side by side. If the car ahead is less than 2 seconds a lap slower than yours, you have no chance to overtake. It takes no skill to hold a car behind at Hungary. At Bahrain you can be challenged into almost any corner. At Hungary you can only do this if you make enough contact for one driver to get investigated by the stewards.
>>

Why don't they just race on ovals if all you want is wide tracks for side by side

ovals are essentially one giant, curving straight tho, and 40 cars swapping slipstream for 2 hours is a very different breed of racing to F1. monza is the closest to an oval f1 goes to and the slipstream trading rarely makes for interesting races

in F1 you have a wide mix of hairpins, sweepers, esses, chicanes, straights and other twists, compared to an oval which is two or three left hand turns separated by a straight. you can't defend from a faster car on an oval, you can't take different lines through different corners to catch your rival off guard, you can't beat them in a traction zone, you can't make your car wide enough to block them from taking the outside line and then loiter on the apex just enough to make them back off.

there's more challenge to making an overtake through eau rouge or the senna s than on an oval even if making it stick is the hard part

Allan McNish and maybe Jack Nicholls (from Formula E) for commentary alongside an established ITV broadcaster like Gavin Emmett or whoever. Wouldn't be surprised if they went with Jonathan "PROBLEMS" Legard tho.

Nicki Shields for trackside reporting (i.e. Lee/trackside Pinks) and Jennie Gow for general presenting (i.e Suzie/studio Pinks)

from what i heard the track was shortened to its current form because fia deemed it too long compared to most modern (the tilkedromes began to appear en masse then) so they threatened to discontinue it unless they shorten it

that and also apparently many drivers complained that the long straights would cause a lot of cars in the 90s to break down due to engine and transmission failures

makes sense i suppose but i also still prefer the original circuit
>>
>>64313411
Nah Hockenheimring was in length. (Spa is basically the limit)
Originally when asked to update the facilities at the circuit tilke just wanted to widen the circuit in the forest to FIA spec.

The government and circuit owners though asked for as little deforestation to happen as possible and for the outer forest to be connected to the inner forest.
They also wanted more seats, better angles for cameras, better angles for fans at the track and a shorter circuit to reduce maintenance cost plus a load of other inane shit.
>>
>>64313493
>>64313411
>"The old Hockenheimring was a fast-lane track with long straights," Tilke explains. "There was something very special about it, about how rare its layout was, so we wanted therefore to keep as much as possible of the old track.
>"The original idea was just to broaden the existing track according to current safety regulations, and to keep the track to its original length. At that time the restrictions and possibilities the site offered were not clear however and the idea eventually proved unfeasible.
>"Firstly, there was a doctrine to save forests, and to even merge the enclosed section of trees with the adjacent forest, so chopping down trees had to be kept to an absolute minimum. That produced a second constraint: we had to use as little area as possible for the new track. Then of course we had to factor in financial resources and a tight timescale.
>"The task became to design something new, on the existing site, and make it more interesting and accessible for visitors, all without impacting upon the woodland. Today's track layout is the result of that intense idea exchange and development process, conducted alongside the Hockenheim management."
>>
>>64313575
If Tilke gets the 2018 contract for the redesign of Spa I am literally going to go there with a shovel and try and bury it until they stop me.

The safety aspect also included how there weren't enough access roads through the forest for medical cars/ambulances if needed.

Not to mention the fact that anyone could walk through the forest and reach the circuit, much like the track invader who interrupted the 2000 race (GOAT race for those who've never watched it).

Essentially, the issues (besides safety) were twofold - the overtakes happened in areas with fewer grandstands and spectators, and that trees couldn't be cut down in the forest to add more grandstands because they'd have to replant exactly the same number they'd cut down. So they decided to shorten it, make the layout as it is today, and let the forest reclaim the rest of it to make up for the deforestation to build the new bits.
