Is <insert any sports with televison, betting and tickets involved here> rigged?
[spolier] any sport [/spolier]
After last years superbowl, how could it be anything else?
Not so much fixed as guided. A team needs to cover a spread here, an over/under there, certain teams would be better for viewer revenue in the playoffs, etc.
Fixed? Probably.
Officiated to the point that it's barely entertaining anymore? Yes.
>>64266151
1. Spoilers don't work on /sp/
2. That's not even how you spell spoiler.
>>64266158
So what, in your opinion any time something exciting happens it's fixed? Do you even know how hard it would be to coordinate that exact pick? Most corners drop that ball because Wilson fired it in there. You can't fix a single play and there would be far too many players in on it for this to ever be a keepable secret. Your tinfoil hat is showing.
>my team is a victim of bad luck or a bad call
>entire league is rigged
When will this meme die?
>>64266112
I don't think it is. I don't think the squabbling owners or the league office's incompetence could organize something like that.
The reason certain teams always do well and some teams are always awful is that there is a very small number of people on earth who know how to effectively run a football team. If you're a fan of a team with shitty management (you know who you are) well don't get too comfortable with the idea that parity exists in the NFL and that any team can win. Simply put, your shitty team is run by nincompoops who are nothing if not notable for their shocking ability to botch high draft picks.
>Do you even know how hard it would be to coordinate that exact pick?
Not that hard when you throw on second down, with one of the best RBs of all time, who has been styling on the pats D-Line all game.
You see, ive only been following the NFL for about 5 years and even I have the knowledge that you RUN THAT FUCKING PLAY
its not not fixed, its just arranged.
>>64266112
sort of
>>64266267
Forgot my point: The only explanation is that the game was rigged for a Pats win
I don't doubt it.
>>64266151
UFC is definitely rigged
Dana White is banned from EVERY Casino because it is well known he rigs the fights
Influenced would be a better term for it. These refs, man.
>>64266686
I dont think any sport is fixed. Certain matches for sure, this is proven. I just don't think you can reliably fix an entire season.
If I were a commissioner, I'd use basic prediction to set up favorable conditions that lead to excitement and money. Beyond that, it seems too obvious to get away with cheating, as a surprise team/athlete can blow up the best laid plans anyway
>>64266151
NBA is probably the easiest to rig
NFL does it by PI and Holding penalties also
Can call a holding penalty on the offensive line EVERY single play in the NFL. Refs choose when to do it to keep games entertaining and close.
Just last night on MNF Odell Beckham was gifted a TD catch that he had help from the ground. The ball even moved and shifted in his hands but the point is he plays for New York. Miami has no chance of making the division interesting but the Giants do.
NFL cares about one thing, MONEY. Ratings equal money and they will tilt calls in favor of teams to keep them in a playoff race. New York is a major market for football and they can't market up the last 2 games as important enough to Watch if they don't have any influence on the playoffs. Drama and Hype equals ratings and money.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgiDz6y4xrY
Tim Donaghy is a prime example and his youtube channel is great source
>>64266795
>The ball even moved and shifted in his hands
I don't agree but you're welcome to your opinion.
Rest of your post is on point, I just think the Giants won that game themselves
It may have been dragged along the turf, but OBJ had it trapped for sure.
>>64266830
That's fine but if you watch the film it moved when it drug against the ground and it definitely helped him control it.
>>64266312
why would they rig it for the Pats to win when they were framing them with deflategate?

Well as a patsfag i know they gave Denver that win.

>implying players aren't bribed to throw games
Yes.
>Detroit beats green bay
>Goodell: Rodgers sucked my dick last night, so he has to win
>Refs: Yes sir!
>flag
>free extra play
>outcome of the game changed
there would have been a defensive pass interference call if the ball was dropped or picked off.
>>64266902
Smoke and Mirrors, Goodell knew questions were going to be asked after the game and needed a scapegoat explanation. Im 100% convinced it was the NFL themselves who deflated the balls just so they could rig the superbowl.
The reason why I cannot say, the Patriots organization doesn't have a single likable quality about it, including its mouth-breathing fanbase. They probably just paid off someone..
>>64266960
THIS. they put the spotlight on the cocky heel team, watch as the media puts the patriots on every TV from mexico to canada, and give them a generous schedule of M<onday and Thursday night games, and people who don't care about either team or football in general tune in to watch the team that's been all over the media for months.
you could replace Roger Goodell with Vince McMahon and literally nothing would change.
>>64266267
Except it's not that simple. It's hard to run when everyone knows it's coming and can put 8-9 guys in the box. The palycall really wasn't that bad, but Butler made a hell of a read to break on that route as soon as the ball is snapped.
>>64267203
>get an extra play
This is worth jack shit unless your qb can bomb the ball 70 yards as high as Rodgers did. Just giving them that extra play only gave them like a 1% chance to win.
>>64267344
I bet Goodell asks Vince for booking advice.
>>64266686
He fixes certain match ups.
But fights are not staged.
Example: Ronda Rousy made money. It is her attitude and undefeated record.
Dana set her up against Holm because holm was up and coming.
He didn't think for a second that Rousy would lose. He tried stomp out all the up and comers to keep selling Rousy as indestructible. Because she was a money making idol.
But fights themselves are not staged.
>>64266112
its not rigged but the reffing has gotten just terrible. they fuck up one call because they're idiots, then they give the other team a "make up" call, then theres the "homer calls" its all just garbage, the refs need to be more disciplined.
>>64267498
That facemask penalty wouldn't have mattered if Rodgers couldn't throw the hail mary 70 yards.
In todays NFL if you even graze the side of a Quarterbacks helmet it's going to get called. Even more so if it is a QB that makes the NFL truckloads of money like Rodgers does. People can argue at that point Rodgers was a runner and not a QB but that is using logic. This is a league now that is full of such pussification all you need to do after a hit is lay on the ground and moan. Refs are calling penalties on hits just because of how 'hard' they look. Go back and watch the Greats like Lott and Atwater. They would be flagged for their hits that everyone considers Great but the NFL has changed. Whether it is to protect their investments worth MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of dollars or if it is to make the game more offensive. Everybody wants to see Dragons on every play but that wouldn't be possible if they didn't baby the Quarterbacks and make the defensive players scared to hit someone.
>>64266795
Is that you Tim? You sound like a mouth breather.
>>64266267
So for your insane fantasy to actually be true you would have to have rus wilson in on it, the receiver, several members of the Defense, the coach the OC. All of these guys are in on this grand scheme to throw a game ending interception? You're delusional.
>>64267659
My name is Roger
Insults are all you can muster because everything written is true.
>>64267085
>Implying one player would be capable of throwing the game without getting benched or cut from the team.
You're fucking stupid. I'm not just saying this as an internet insult, you're actually as dumb as a box of rocks. Please never reproduce.
>>64266267
It's much more simple than being a HUGE cheating conspiracy
Pete Carroll didn't want Lynch one of the most niggerish playes to score and win the MVP. If Russell Uncle Tom Wilson makes that throw and the Seahawks win he would of won the MVP. It's no secret that Wilson is the face of the organization for the next 5-10 years and Coach Carroll didn't want Lynch to be the hero. Why would Lynch come off the field smiling at Pete Carroll after losing the Superbowl? Because Lynch knew his planned failed and blew up in his face costing the entire team the Superbowl instead of handing the ball off on 2nd down.
>>64267707
>implying one or a few players have never point shaven or fixed a game
Read a book ya mook
http://espn.go.com/30for30/film?page=playingforthemob
This is probably more your speed
>nobody would EVER do anything wrong for money
>>64267795
Come on, man. This isn't basketball -- there are ~40 people who take the field for each team in a professional football game. Just one of these players is not going to make a big enough difference on his own to completely lose the game single handedly.
>>64267824
Quarterback touches the ball almost 100% of the time during offensive plays.
This is probably bait anyway but you should do some research on players that were caught fixing games.
>>64266112
100% fixed. You'd have to be downright retarded to think it's not
I just don't know how it could be a conspiracy. I know people who used to be in the NFL (not big-time) and they knew nothing of a conspiracy. How far up would such a conspiracy go? Would the payoffs really be worth it in this hypothetical conspiracy? I just feel like fixing games for a few extra viewers seems extremely difficult for such a small outcome.
>>64267764
No, when you're one play away from winning the Super Bowl you're not thinking about who you want to be the hero, you're just trying to win.
They ran it with Lynch the play before and he could have easily scored if it wasn't for a great tackle. They had to throw it on 2nd down or 3rd down for clock management reasons.
They chose 2nd down and it didn't work out.
>>64267824
I know it's bait but it's just too tasty to pass up.
>>64267941
You'd be retarded to think it is, there's no incentive to fix the league, you're risking billions of dollars in revenue if the public ever found out and would irreparably harm your company's image.
>>64268027
this
Fivethirtyeight's done the analysis on this fifty times over. Brady's #2 at game-winning drives. If there was ever an opponent that you might want to be extra careful with to not give clock time, it's Tom Brady.
>>64266927
Coincidently thats also the only reason that pats can hold a super young o line and be competitive
>>64267795
That was low level college basketball and they still couldn't even fix it properly without getting caught. You think it's possible to fix a multi-billion dollar industry with millions of people watching every game?
>>64268106
>one player would be capable of throwing the game without getting benched or cut from the team.
This was the comment
One player Would be able to throw a game if he was playing the right position and had the motivation to do so. Doesn't mean it happens but it's far from being impossible.
>>64268149
I guess technically it's possible but he'd have to be
>In a position where he can single handedly swing the game
>be good and respected enough to not get benched for multiple mistakes
>never repeat it because it would lead to inquiries and at the very least getting cut and losing his job.
That's a fairly small list, and you're risking your multi-million dollar salary and possible jail time if you attempt it.
>>64268060
Go to bed Roger
>>64268060
But how can you prove if it is indeed fixed? As with Donaghy, NFL can just blame it on one ref and do a full denying game. News is run by the big networks that are all making just as much money out of the product as NFL. So, at least, it's not in anyone's interest to investigate potential fix.
Or otherwise, as it was in NBA, they could just as easily keep it under the rugs. Donaghy may have been outspoken, but a lot of things that he revealed made sense, jet it was covered very poorly. I know only of one espn article that outright denied everything he said, and was written almost as if it came out of NBA itself.
>>64267909
>>64268028
They can make it harder to win, but the defense/special teams are certainly able to make up for it. And if the guy isn't even handing it off correctly, his ass is going to the bench.
>>64268269
Nice counter-argument
There's literally no incentive to fix the league when the alternative attracted some of the world's best athletes to compete against each other in a sport while you rake in billions of dollars in cash.
>>64268328
Not quite true. Being able to fix matches for gambling is a strong incentive theoretically....however I agree that it would be extremely easy to get caught.
>>64266112
there are so many boyscout athletes out there that somebody would've blown the whistle already
>>64268302
But why would the fix the league? Look at the problem logically. Has it been fixed since the league was established? With no leaks ever?
Or was it once a competitive sport, and they decided to fix games to make it more exciting?
But that raises the question of why they would fix a sport that was already popular and has been steadily growing in popularity since it's inception, economically it doesn't make sense to change a formula that's working while risking everything if the public found out.
>>64268397
How is that a strong incentive? You're risking the entire sport's popularity for a few extra million or even billion dollars when the long term growth of the NFL will be exponentially larger
>>64268432
>But that raises the question of why they would fix a sport that was already popular and has been steadily growing in popularity since it's inception
You seem to severely underestimate the greed of men.
>Pats win superbowl after 9/11
>New Orleans wins superbowl after hurricane Katrina
>Ravens/49ers superbowl with lights going out
But the ticket stub says "You are paying to view a football game" it doesn't specify it has to be played by any rules, that another team can't cheat, etc. etc.
And then at the end "this presentation is copyrighted, blah blah"
The refs all work for the league, which is a machine.
Jordan was the most profitable athlete of all time generating approx $10 billion in revenue, the league sucked his dick real hard.
It's entertainment...1st and foremost...feels bad man. Mafia is everywhere too.
>>64268477
Actually I'm not, they're smart business men who want to make a profit, economically it makes no sense to start fixing games instead of spending more time making it a better product, attracting better athletes, creating more ad revenue and negotiating better TV deals.
>>64268328
Because there's billions of dollars on the line and they don't want to leave things to chance. They fix games to make them close, exciting finishes, make sure certain stars stand out to milk them for more cash, to get favourable match ups in the playoffs that will get maximum viewers. Goodell would kill himself if there were teams like the jags or Titans in the sb
>>64268468
Sure, for the NFL. For individual players who routinely are on the edge of being cut out of the NFL, it's a more than acceptable risk.
>>64268533
delusion: the post
>>64266112
I'm not going to say completely fixed, but it's definitely weighted.
>>64268533
how would lights going out and losing viewers because of awkward delays be scripted?
Ask any mafia member and he'll tell you he has hundreds of football and basketball players on his payroll to make sure they shave points to get the spread they want. They don't fix wins or losses. It's all about the spread
>>64268556
The Titans HAVE been in the Super Bowl, there HAVE been blow outs in playoff and Super Bowl games.
It makes more sense to let two evenly matched teams compete while you take all the money. The NFL makes all it's money from ad revenue and TV deals, both of which are already paid before the games are even played.
>>64267583
>implying Dana didn't overly hype Rousey so that when she lost the inevitable rematch would make a shit load of money
Alright I'm sick of this thread so I'll end it now.
I am a Broncos fan. In 97-98 we circumvented the salary cap to pay TD and Elway off the books. Not a serious offense, but still cheating.
So that leaves me with these thoughts:
If the league is fixed for us to win, we shouldn't have had to cheat or be caught.
If we weren't supposed to win, we cheated to beat the system, meaning it wasn't rigged very well.
VERDICT: not fixed
>>64268590
Oh do you extensively interview members of the mafia?
>seacucks fans still unable to cope with reality
hourly reminder that this actually happened
>>64268618
You havent yet made a convincing argument all you have said is that NFL makes money by ad revenue.
How is ad revenue generated? Viewer numbers. How do you get viewers? You make a product people want to watch. How do you make a product worth watching? You control the results behind the scenes.
>>64268618
>there HAVE been blow outs in playoff and Super Bowl games.
yeah that used to be the norm back in the 90s. but, that was before goodell took office. since then, the playoffs and super bowl have been much more even, appealing, and streamlined for big market fans.
>The Titans HAVE been in the Super Bowl
again, not under the reign of goodell.
>>64266235
Never
>>64268664
>How do you make a product worth watching? >You control the results behind the scenes.
Massive leap in logic there, you make a product worth watching by creating an ultra competitive league with freakishly talented athletes, people naturally love sports and competition you don't have to do anything special behind the scenes to make them watch.
>>64268641
>he doesn't live in Montreal and have connections
Kek pussy
Anyway here some articles talking about how easy it is
https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/how-to-fix-an-nfl-game
> "Gimme a quarterback, an offensive lineman, and a defensive back," legendary sports gambler Lem Banker once told me, "and I can control the outcome of any football game." The reality is an aspiring game fixer doesn't need all three. One key player (or referee) could alter the outcome of any NFL game enough to cover the point spread. And it is much easier than you would believe to sink your hooks into such a person
http://jimrome.com/2014/10/29/former-mafia-boss-michael-franzese-talks-with-jim-rome/
>ranzese says most college athletes don’t think it’s a big deal if they shave a few points and are easier targets by outsiders than professional athletes because they don’t make money.
>“It’s never about winning or losing, it’s all about the spread,” said Franzese. “If you put it in their heads and say ‘Hey, you’re not causing your team to lose. You will shave a few points. What’s the big deal? In the meantime, we’re going to line your pockets you’re going to do pretty well. School isn’t paying you any money.
>>64268695
The Super Bowl 2 years ago was a blowout from the first snap of the ball. There goes that theory down the toilet.
>again, not under the reign of goodell.
So the NFL decided to start fixing games after Goodell became commissioner, even though the sport was naturally projected to be bring in 25 billion in revenue in the future? And all the NFL owners signed off on this idea without one complaint? Luckily they're not at stupid as you.
>>64266209

i said MORE even, not perfectly. and i'm not attempting to explain who, why, or if things are being fixed, i'm just pointing out that your entire argument is complete fucking garbage you twit.
>>64268794
Creating a salary cap and tighter competition is not fixing the outcome of games. My entire argument is based off the most logical way the NFL would try to make money, not vague conspiracies with no factual basis.
