You don't know this, because detecting planets is very difficult due to their relatively tiny size in comparison with other massive objects' gravity overshadowing their effects.
According to recent research, there's even some earth-like planets relatively close-by (a few light-years or so away), and that's just what we know about. Of course this is still a huge distance, but not one so large as to require FTL travel.
