I was having this conversation with a guy at my local kebab shop. He was explaining how Turkish is an unerringly phonetic language, to the extent that there is zero ambiguity about pronunciation even if you've never read the word before.
He put it down to the fact that Ataturk completely overhauled the way the language was written in the 1930s to make it easy for even peasants to learn how to read and write.
I guess the difference is that English spelling conventions never had such a radical, centralised overhaul in order to simplify the language.
A lot of our words were derived from foreign languages a long time ago and their spellings evolved over time at the discretion of publishers, which means that we have a lot of words that have kept features of the old spellings even though pronunciations may have shifted markedly away from those origins.
