jokes aside liverpool were a proper elite side in the mid-late 80's, as were everton at the same time. arsenal and forest also had quality sides in the mid-late 80's, and of course clough had previous in europe. there would have been easily a few more had england not been banned, our football fell behind europe as a result too

English Football in the 80s was generally filthy and extremely violent.
The quality of play on the field was fantastic hence the English clubs dominating Europe however the fans were increasingly violent and this had been growing since the late 60s reaching its peak in the 80s amongst all the teams and is easily observed with a quick glance of attendance figures(Extremely low) and news articles/video from the time.
This was actually a bit of a problem for the government in Britain as it was actually causing incidents and there were attempts by them to try and prevent this earlier, Heysel falling to Liverpool fans was just a coincidental, this being clear with how quickly Maggie pushed for the banning of all English teams.
