I am trying to not over-react, but a match like that really does make you think. We've needed to change something up for a while. Not just this season - our poor form stretches back to January last season, but nothing has changed for the better. We lost players, we didn't adequately replace them, and we haven't changed a thing tactically to try to adapt.
I honestly think that the only reason we did so well in the first half of that season was because we had such a destructive summer that everyone thought we'd be a shell of a team. Well done Koeman for making that team gel enough to surprise people, but ever since our tactics were figured out, we've had nothing. We started with the element of surprise and have nothing when it was gone.
We only win when the other team make mistakes basically. On the rare occasion a bit of decent play gets us a goal (the two vs Bournemouth for example) we still almost always manage to throw it away anyway, and it we need to be playing bottom half teams to even stand a chance. The only time I've been proud of us, thought we did really well this season, was Chelsea. And they were in such poor form it was as much as as them as well.
Now I'm not calling for Koeman's head, and I don't think it'd matter much this season anyway because I just don't think we have the level of talent in the team necessary to do better than mid table, and the only reason we did so last season was because of a great start bought on by being a team that were almost unknown because of the changes.
I don't know that I have the faith in Koeman to be able to change our team around in the long run. Whether that is down to the recruitment (which is only part on Koeman's head) as well is beyond a doubt.
I hope this all turns out to be an over reaction to one bad performance. Liverpool lost 6 - 1 to Stoke last season, maybe this is just a hammering we've been overdue.
